Is it just me or is there something creepy about these photos. I know this is looking into the past but what a different world that was.

It's creepy if he's looking at the young school girls. (or boys)

Thanks for figuring out the rooftop location Hoss! It's a perfect match.

I'm curious, what is this sign in the distance then?

Hoss, there's a noirish connection. The 1950s-era structure housed the County Coroner's office until the offices were moved to the county health center.
The building was turned over to the Center Theater Group in 1967.

"So what had been the morgue became rehearsal space." -said Stephen Rountree, Music Center pres.

Here's the front of the building. (which they're thinking of tearing down)

I wanted to post a photograph of the building when it was the coroner's office, but I haven't located one yet.

below: *This is the best i could do at the moment. It's dated 1967 (so the coroner's office had already moved)

I bet there was a great magnolia life, somewhere, but I think the sign in your picture must say GREAT REPUBLIC LIFE.
The buiding (1923, Walker & Eisen), at 756 S. Spring, was at the spot where Spring and Main merge. It was sold to Occidental Life Insurance in 1935.

lapl photo dated 1927.

...and today looking lonely, seen from the Main St. side.

I had a quick look for that roof sign before posting the location of e_r's picture. Now that Noircitydame has told us that it said "Great Republic Life", I was able to find the pictures below. They're both from a Dick Whittington set called "Street scenes, East 8th Street & South Los Angeles Street & Santee Street, Los Angeles, CA, 1931".

Detail from picture in USC Digital Library

This one is from a lttle closer, but the roof sign isn't as clear.

Does anyone else get the impression that this guy came out to L.A. with the intention of getting "discovered" for the movies? It looks to me like hes hoping some agent or casting director will see these photos and make him a star.

Oh yes, he does appear to be drooling over the prospect of movie fame and fortune.

Noir Cab Driver

Maybe he is dropping off Elizabeth Short in the empty lot in back of the cab. Looks like he could have done it.

Here's the 1956 Superior Oil Building on the corner of W 6th and S Flower Streets. We've seen it a few times before, but most of the old images seem to be missing (and it's hard to resist a color Julius Shulman photo!). This is "Job 2375: Claude Beelman, Superior Oil Building (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1957". On the left is the California Club, with the Sunkist building and Bunker Hill behind. On the right, just a couple of arches of the Bible Institute are visible.

Getty Research Institute

As has been mentioned before, the building is now the Standard Hotel. The California Club remains next door, but the rest of the background looks rather different.

Speaking of Ms. Short, today marks the 69th anniversary of the discovery of her body in the vacant lot at 39th and Norton. RIP, Betty.

We've probably had this on NLA before too but same corner, W
6th and S. Flower, c. 1916. The Plymouth Hotel on the corner, 556 S. Flower. The Victorian houses behind it would be gone in a few years.

Here is a famous entrie for the film Double Indemnity.

One is the actual home ....the other was made on a sound stage for the film. The reason is that they needed a larger space to film the stairs, the door and
the actress walking towards the door....drama.

Two snapshots (1970s?) of an unknown filming location.

eBay

eBay

note that it says Wrightsville on the vintage car.

Does anyone recall a movie that took place in (or near) a Wrightsville?

There are 65 images in this photoset, so obviously I've just picked a small selection. We touched briefly on the Crane Co a few months ago, but didn't get much further than establishing that it was involved with plumbing. Here are a few of Julius Shulman's photos of their premises at 321 E 3rd Street. It's "Job 854: Crane Company Operations Offices (Los Angeles, Calif.),1950". This is the 3rd Street elevation - that car looks quite old for a 1950 photo.

This is the back of the building above.

And here's the loading dock in that building.

The young lady on the left of this office scene seems to be the only one looking at the camera.

This storage room contains loads of pipe fixtures. The man with the suit and tie appears in quite a few of the pictures, so I'm guessing he's quite important.

And finally, this must be the where the emails are handled .

All from Getty Research Institute

It looks like the Crane Co's first appearance in the City Directories is 1893, when they were based at 118-124 Requena Street. Requena Street was just south of Commercial Street, on the west side of Alameda. By 1896, they had moved to 126 N Los Angeles Street, where they stayed until around 1909. The 1921 Baist map still shows the building as the Crane Block. After that, the company was based at 321 E 3rd Street for around half a century, with the last listing at that address in the 1960 CD. Here's an advert from the 1923 CD.

LAPL

This is the building layout in 1952. The boxcar in the Shulman photos was near the end of an S-shaped spur that joined the main line between 1st and 2nd Streets on Alameda. The Crane Co buildings still looked much the same until at least 1980. The 1994 aerial image shows a cleared lot, and the current apartments on the site appear to be under construction on the 2005 image.

We haven't visited the Hotel Regina on NLA.

I happened across this interesting postcard a few months ago on eBay.

I've been trying to figure out where the Hotel Regina pool would have been located.

contemporary aerial

google_earth

Initially I thought the pool must have been in that rectangular grassy area in the parking lot next to the old Hotel Regina building.

But if you look closely at the photograph it doesn't seem possible. (for one thing, there's a house on the left)

Here's an enlargement.

So where the heck was the pool?

Here's a 1972 "Historic Aerial"-- looks like the pool was there in 1964, and going back to at least HA's 1948 shot. Hard to tell, but the pool might have lasted until 1980, possibly later... Looks like a house or other small building to the south of the hotel.

So you're saying this is the pool, right GW? (there looks like there might be another pool to the north) -under the IA of the word AERIALS

But to get the house in the right spot, the photographer would have to be at the back of the pool facing Westlake Avenue.
Yet this can't be the case, because there's a building where the street should be in the vintage photo.

I don't know why I'm not grasping this.

Noted in this morning's LA Times/Real Estate - George Cukor's former home on Cordell Drive is on the market again.

The photographer was facing Westlake Avenue. Here's a comparison with a GSV image looking from the alley at the back. In the vintage image, there's a narrow building between the pool and Westlake Avenue.
