the dells also might have some modest pull from minnesota and iowa too, but yeah, beyond that, it's VERY regional in scope, completely dominated by cheeseheads and FIBS.
the Dells has pull about as far southwest as St. Louis. if you were to ask folks at a party where they went when they were a kid in summer theres always a swath that went north to the Dells /Wisco and/or western MI. theres a decent amount of Michigan transplants for some reason of a certain age - could be legacy from when MO was 2nd or 3rd most important auto/auto part MFG state and St. Louis had 3 or 4 large auto plants and the Corvette factory. The kids of Michigan transplants that are now my age remain attached to heading north in summer.

i grew up going to Gulf Shores in late spring and early fall since I was in school year round. it was a pretty sleepy condo strewn beach “town” then but I feel like the whole Gulf Coast has been Panama Citied now.

How in the world is Miami Beach "trashy" with it's world renowned Art Deco district?

West Edmonton Mall can look trashy but it is a mall, and a decent one at that.

Ocean Drive can get pretty trashy on a Friday/ Saturday night but yeah, MB is an art deco gem.

Panama City Beach is indeed trashy but head a dozen or so miles either east or west and you have some of the most beautiful beaches in the country.

It seems like any place that has a Ripley's, or a Madame Tussauds, is in contention.

On that premise, I was going to suggest Hot Springs, AR, which also has a Tussauds (although interestingly, not a "Madame Tussauds", but rather, a "Josephine Tussaud", her great-great-granddaughter). Hot Springs also has a very heavy tourist-based economy (they've got the Duck Tours too). But there is enough local history, authentic architecture, and natural beauty that I think it overrides the trash-factor. It's actually a really cool little city. If you've never been, I'd recommend it.

so yeah, the dells' pull might be a bit further afield than i was previously giving it credit for.

and while it's not completely dominated by cheeseheads and FIBs, i'd still guess that if you polled 100 random tourists in the dells on a summer afternoon, at least 75 of them would be of one of those two perssuasions.

The Dells is a common go-to for Michiganders as well. At least, it was when I was a kid. Cedar Point probably has a much larger pull than the Dells, nowadays. Cedar Point has marketing campaigns with deals targeted specifically to Michiganders (and I admit we've chomped on those deals before, because they're pretty good).

i've seen them in orlando, wisconsin dells, and panama city beach.

and googling around, they're also in:

niagara falls
myrtle beach
branson
pigeon forge

so those attractions are another dead give away.

Holy cow! That looks like Google street view in something like Disney World or Cedar Point. 100% peak touristy - you literally cannot go any higher than that.

I'm not sure how old you are and this might be generational, but I don't recall ever hearing of the Wisconsin Dells before high school (via That 70s Show in the late 90s/early 00s). In college, a friend of mine went on a summer vacation trip with her family, and that was the first time I'd ever heard of anyone from Michigan going there. Going to Cedar Point, on the other hand, was as common as going to the mall, lol.
