I had not heard of that. I thought I heard some speculation about a Lloyd Center stadium?

Gayle Benson is the full owner of the Pelicans. All of the family disputes have been resolved through a settlement.

Also, remember there are 3 million people within a 90 minute drive of the Smoothie King Center, and the games are broadcast across the entire Gulf South from the Florida Panhandle to east Texas (2.5 million households). It's a bigger market than most people realize.
That's like saying there's 20 million+ within 90 miles of Philadelphia. That works for the NFL, which is once a week but not for the NBA, which has at least 20-25 games a season on weeknights.

If you aren't within an hour drive of the arena, it's hard to be a season ticket holder.

Add on to that how impoverished New Orleans is and it's a miracle they have one team, let alone two. The Saints have been there for decades, so they'll likely be there for the long haul but I doubt the Pelicans are long for New Orleans.

Until Gayle Benson is dead, the Saints & Pelicans aren't going anywhere. Baton Rouge metro and Gulfport-Biloxi metro are both within an hour's drive of downtown New Orleans and take the overall population of the region to 2 million plus. Throw in Houma-Thibodaux, which is even closer than the rest, for extra measure. If you think all four of those metros are all comprised of impoverished people, you're mistaken.

Also, the entire State of Louisiana is willing to sell it's soul and resources to keep those teams happy in New Orleans. I only wish that the NBA team would have gone with "Gulf Coast whatevers" instead of New Orleans Pelicans. Or at the least, used a one-syllable word for the team. Still better than the Baby Cakes I suppose.

not in st. louis, yes probably in kc. st. louis isn't a pro-basketball town, well not since the hawks flew off for atlanta...

also really doubt a pan-missouri team would sit well in st. louis.

let's be real here about pro-sports relocation of leagues to towns that have already been screwed over by the same/multiple leagues once or twice (or three or four or five times) already...

Some concept art for a Seattle Sockeyes team.

Very happy to see Seattle get a team, I just don't think everyone should expect the same success as Vegas has been able to achieve in their historic start. Seems like a good sports town though and I hope they can maintain some good support through some potential tough years while they build a team.

Not 100% but everything is being set in motion. The league's owners approved the $650 million expansion fee, and the Seattle ownership group have filed an official expansion application and paid the $10 million deposit. They oversold season ticket deposits and got over 25k in the first day.

Bettman also confirmed that a Seattle expansion would feature the same rules as the Vegas Expansion Draft.

Barring any major setbacks they should be entering the league around 2020.

The Panthers had a pretty good start as well. .500 their first 2 seasons and made the Stanley Cup Finals in their 3rd season....and then have won 0 post season series since then and only made the playoff twice in the last 20 years in a sport where everyone makes the playoffs.

interesting.

i'm guessing this will require some division realignment.

the coyotes get booted into the central?

Moving the Coyotes is the only one that makes sense really. You cant break up the Alberta teams or a new potential Vancouver-Seattle Rivalry. Splitting off any of the California team ruins the battle of California. The league also won't geographically isolate their new pet project in Vegas. I think they hope that Vegas and LA build a rivalry in the coming years.

Each NBA team plays 82 games during the regular season, far more than half of which (60-65) are played on weeknights.

None of those regions are particularly rich and you have to deal with college basketball in some cases.

And Baton Rouge is more like an hour an a half from New Orleans, especially when you consider it's more than literally just driving from Point A to Point B at 70 MPH but rather having to leave your home, get to the freeway, fight traffic, get off it, get to the arena, park and walk in.

Looking at it like that, it's a 3-4 hour round trip in traffic most nights. You'd have to be a diehard NBA fan to want to put up with that regularly. Even if you left with 5 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, you're looking at getting back home at 10:45-11:00 P.M. not to mention potentially missing an exciting ending often times. If you work a normal job or go to school that's gonna be hard to do.

It's not impossible but not convenient either except as an occasional thing. Luckily for the Pelicans, a significant number of their ticket buying fan base lives close to the arena, not to mention a few tourists. I'm still shocked they've lasted this long.

I'm referring to home games. Each NBA team hosts at least 20-25 weeknight home games each season (not including the playoffs) and 41 overall. The number is actually probably closer to 30 and again before the playoffs, which many years adds an extra 3-7 home games.

Looking at it that way, most of your season ticket holders need to be within 15 miles of the arena, accounting for rush hour traffic. Luckily for New Orleans, many of their fans aren't all that far from the arena.

Agreed. Anyone who thinks Nashville isn't a hockey town these days simply doesn't have a clue what they're talking about. Here is a shot of a PORTION of the crowd outside the arena during one of the Playoff games last year.

Another possibility would be moving Colorado to the Pacific and putting both Alberta teams in the Central. It would make some sense to have the Avs in the same division as Vegas, Arizona and the west coast teams, and Winnipeg would probably have a rivalry with Edmonton and Calgary pretty quickly. The downside is that the Canucks would lose their Canadian rivals and travel would become hell for Dallas and Nashville. Also Arizona is almost certainly going to move eventually. Arizona to the Central probably makes a little more sense.

Personally I would like to see the Coyotes move to Milwaukee. Wisconsin should have an NHL team, it is already part of hockey's natural base in the US. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to enter into Bettman's calculations.

After Nashville played in Minnesota a couple weeks ago I noticed people in Preds jerseys walking around Minneapolis the next day. Any team that has fans that will travel 900 miles for a game has a legit fan base.
