They need to get as much done as possible before the inevitable blanket stop-work orders arrive. At least Vanderbilt is still ahead of schedule and so stands to lose less money from delays.

Here in Italy the government is about to shut down all building sites.

Yeah, the construction industry is exempt for now, but that can surely change. In the timeline of these things, a shutdown of a few months won’t matter - we’ve had longer. But obviously one more in the chain of people’s personal lives. But at the end if the day, lives are more inportant.

^Too bad I can't get close enough to bribe someone on site for a little piece of that steel. A small piece the size of a hand, or a couple of rivets? Relic! Or get a somewhat larger piece and take it to a swordsmith. A sword or knife made from a piece of a skyscraper's steel would be all kinds of awesome.

Compared with this pic...when we get down to it, I expect a similar view of the rails below 270.

^That picture makes me wonder if 277 Park even has much of a basement. Sitting on its plaza, I swear I felt the vibrations of trains under my feet by times.

Like 270, at least part of it should. The buildings around and just north of Grand Central are built above similar to the Hudson Yards rail yard development.

The western end of the 270 site will require some excavation...

You can easily feel the trains pass from the building, too. I was at least ten floors up and could feel them while sitting in a meeting.

Wow. I read somewhere that the Pan Am has extensive base isolating to try and avoid that. You would think they would do the same for 277, or maybe they did and it just didn't work too well.

On the humorous side, I must refrain from making vibrator jokes!

Great article. (Been a while since I've said that about an NYT piece.) I can't wait to see a mirror image of this photo, but of the construction of 270. What a cool contrast it will be.

There would be some irony in that. In then again, in 20 years, it could replay itself yet again. They're supposed to be finished with the demo portion of construction by this time next year. The shift to construction mode may or may not have already begun.

This drawing gets the orientation right on both towers (Vanderbilt and 270) that the model placement had wrong...
