I am pro development but I also think that specific area's long terms prospect are much more valuable as a heritage/tourist/entertainment district than to try to further it as as a modern city center/core with office buildings and parking garages.
Agree, and the West downtown could remain a modern building enclave. (West of Waldegrave) I would give a pass to the AP hotel however, as it somewhat mitigates the awfulness of the garage. It is also not a new footprint, but a topping of the garage.

Funny...no one said boo when there was a skanky strip club in the same location. This is the kind of crap that kills any interest in doing business in the downtown.

Council to Decide on Amended Regulations to Allow for Garage Hotel

Looks like the fate of this proposal will be decided tonight.

VOCM News
Feb 17, 2020

Quote:
The proposed hotel on top of the AP Parking Garage in Downtown St. John’s may be one step closer to being approved today.

At tonight’s city council meeting, council will decide whether or not to adopt the amended regulations needed for the proposal to move ahead, once they receive a provincial release.

Don't forget to email City Council with your thoughts on supporting or denying this (or any other, ie Brewdock) proposal. Especially if you are in favor of it. The opposition to projects are usually more vocal and involved so showing support a project is very valuable.

Even though the vote is tonight, a quick email is all it takes. Contact info can be found here:

Done, and at the bottom of that page, there is a link to email all councillors with one address!
Don't forget to sign both your name and civic address.

I live in the West End and I too think it is poor use of that site! A prime example of trying to put lipstick on a pig. As a City (ie: Council) we should stand up to these "take it or leave it" developers.

Yes. You've said before. I however, think it's a perfect use to mitigate what's there and add some colour. Allowing that there's some subjectivity to any design, I fail to see what all the hysteria surrounding it is. It's not like it's a huge new development. It's a colourful capping basically of what's there.

The existing garage will not be torn down anytime soon. It's structurally sound. So sound they wanna build a hotel on it. You may live in the West end but most of the opposition is from the same crowd as always. They also opposed the BrewDock, which thankfully has passed.

If I was a developer in this case, I would have a take it or leave it attitude as well. They've been jerked around by council for awhile over this.

Exxon Mobil's new corporate headquarters on Hebron Way is looking pretty close to being finished.

Couple of pics of another office building under construction. This one is on Sea Rose Drive just opposite the west entrance to Canadian Tire. This area will really benefit when the new extension of Hebron to Majors Path is opened.

The former Quality Inn on Hill 'O' Chips downtown has now been rebranded as a DoubleTree by Hilton hotel. They are still working on the exterior facade. The former Rumpelstiltskins restaurant is now called The Little Sparo.
