I live in the suburbs (please don't hold that against me) and this year, just before Christmas, I hung a couple strings (total 400 multicolored) of these solar-powered LEDs, running back-and-forth, all along my privacy fence at the back of the lot:

They are mounted on the inside of the fence, facing into my yard, and I don't have neighbors to the rear of me. They'll be there year-round, and as long as the fence stands.
I also have strings of solar-powered LEDs that are mounted inside perforated metal stars, along my side fences in the back yard, so those provide decoration day and night.
These decorative lights are better than peering out my back window at the darkest time of night and just seeing nothing. The lights are dim, so they don't pollute with their light - the sky is still plenty black, so I can still look up and see real stars.
Now, although I did hang them before Christmas, that is merely a coincidence, because I don't celebrate the holiday, beyond taking advantage of Black Friday sales to buy myself stuff, sending gifts to my parents by rote, and just going through the motions for the benefit of those who do believe in the myths about a "magical sky friend."
Further, I like "The Grinch That Stole Christmas," but only as long as it is shut off at the middle, when the whole story starts to go to pot.
And yes, I'm serious about all the above.
