@ brickell, population figures for Guyanese, Jamaican, Haitian, Brazilian, etc will more than likely be released with Summary File 2 as it was in the 2000 Census. I think we may have to wait until later this year or some time next year to see that release though.

New York has the largest Ecuadorian population in the US by far (& I think that the DC area has the largest Bolivian population). I'm guessing that New York City's Ecuadorian population is larger than Madrids by now possibly giving New York another one of those "most of X than any other metro in the world outside of their home country" title.

In downtown, new kids on the block

Read More: http://www.startribune.com/local/min...125692778.html

Quote:
A new form of transportation has joined the car, bus, bike and light-rail train in downtown Minneapolis. The stroller. The number of kids under age 5 living in downtown neighborhoods has tripled since 2000, according to newly released U.S. census figures. The 2010 census counted 444 small children in the area from the Mill District through downtown and along the Mississippi River to Plymouth Avenue.

The rapid growth, coupled with increases in older children as well, is the most telling evidence to date that downtown's swelling population is much more than young professionals and empty nesters. Since 2000, the population of the Downtown East, Downtown West and North Loop neighborhoods has risen to more than 11,000 people, up 82 percent.

The growth, which has converted some condo hallways into the downtown equivalent of suburban cul-de-sacs, promises to reshape the area as developers, businesses and even the city cater to urban tots, urban studies experts say. The depth of the trend will depend largely on whether parents can cope with the lack of nearby schools and other conveniences as their kids age.

"It shows that parents are willing to have kids downtown," said David Frank, who moved downtown six years ago with his wife and daughter, now 14. Until recently, Frank worked for a developer who built hundreds of condo units in neighborhood along the Mississippi. Now he's in charge of helping to promote transit-oriented development for the city.

The State of Metropolitan America: Suburbs and the 2010 Census

PDF: http://www.brookings.edu/~/media/Fil...esentation.pdf

Quote:
.....

First, the initial results from the 2010 Census signal a continuing demographic convergence within U.S. metropolitan areas, one that is blurring the lines that have long separated cities and suburbs.

Second, this convergence results from a complicated mix of economic, social, and physical changes in metro areas, and raises a host of consequences for suburban communities at the front lines of change.

And third, in light of these growing and shared challenges, we must adopt a metropolitan approach to managing and making the most of demographic change in an increasingly metropolitan world.

Isn't this something that everyone has known for several hundred years? Hardly something that comes from reviewing the new census.

A better way of putting it might be that some things should be more localized and some things more regionalized. This is area by area, depending on the particular city, county or other district involved and what right or wrong decisions have been made in the past.

White flight — to the city

Read More: http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/...7955238.column

Quote:
.....

New census data reveal that Washington, where the population has been more than 50% black since the early 1960s, has lost its black majority. Likewise, due to a decline in the presence of blacks, Latinos and Asians, for the first time since the 1970s a majority of Manhattan's population is white. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, which prided itself on being overwhelmingly African American (remember Mayor C. Ray Nagin and his "chocolate city" speech?), has seen the percentage of black residents drop precipitously. Even Atlanta, long a stronghold for the African American middle class, is projected to lose its black majority this decade.

- And in Los Angeles, after half a century of decline, the city's white population has stabilized and even increased in the central city. Over the last 10 years, for instance, the white share of the population of Echo Park grew from 13% to 23%. Thus far, news stories on these shifts have focused on individual cities or the inevitable bruised feelings inherent in the process of demographic change. In San Francisco, then-Mayor Gavin Newsom lamented that the city's declining black population meant that Babylon by the Bay was losing its soul. One commentator called the decline of diversity in Manhattan a sort of "benign ethnic cleansing."

- But no one seems to be connecting the dots and concluding that American cities are on the verge of big change. On one level this is a story about race and class, but the more profound shift in the U.S. urban experience will be cultural. Once upon a time, a newcomer to the big city was most likely a country bumpkin obliged to make his way among the sophisticates. But the in-migration today is coming from the suburbs, whose denizens are relatively well-off and capable of wielding cultural power in their new neighborhoods.

Even when affluent, minorities live in poorer neighborhoods

Read More: http://californiawatch.org/dailyrepo...borhoods-11839

PDF Report: http://www.s4.brown.edu/us2010/Data/...report0727.pdf

Quote:
The average affluent black or Hispanic household lives in a poorer neighborhood than does the average working-class white household, showing that higher incomes do not always translate to upward residential mobility, according to a new analysis of census data. Researchers with US 2010, a project on recent American demographic changes, found that with only one exception – affluent Asians – minorities at every income level live in poorer neighborhoods than their white counterparts.

- "More is at work here than simple market processes that place people according to their means," US 2010 Project Director John Logan said in the report. "There is a substantial component of segregation that cannot be accounted for by income." Take, for example, affluent households – those whose annual income is above $75,000. From 2005 to 2009, the average affluent white resident lived in a neighborhood where 8.9 percent of households were poor (making less than $40,000 a year). But for affluent blacks and Hispanics, neighborhood poverty was 13 percent or higher. These figures reflect the racial and ethnic isolation in which minorities live, researchers said.

- Across the United States, black, Hispanic and Asian households live in neighborhoods with higher proportions of their own race and ethnicity than are in their greater metropolitan regions. The average black household, for example, lived in a neighborhood where 40.7 percent of residents were black, even though blacks made up 19 percent of the metropolitan region. "Residential segregation is not benign," Logan said in the report. "It does not mean only that blacks and Hispanics, Asians and whites live in different neighborhoods with little contact between them. It means that whatever their personal circumstances, black and Hispanic families on average live at a disadvantage and raise their children in communities with fewer resources."

So now it's not OK for ethnic groups to freely chose to live with their own ethnic group if they can afford to live somewhere else? Kind of peculiar thinking. It may be time to get over hyper-analyzing race and ethnicity. The goal is to increase "mobility" (that is, an end to restrictions that did not allow you to move to a neighborhood), not to achieve a perfect homogenization, which is neither attainable or desirable.

Irony: almost every ethnicity in the world in almost every city, but only 2000 Paiute and 10k Salish altogether. Outnumbered even by the Khmer.

^Actually, there are over 4,000 Paiute alone in Nevada & 12,000 Salish in Washington State. However, the Paiute (alone) are a small native American community & will probably number below 8,000 when all the numbers are added up nation-wide. The majority are found in California, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona & Utah. The Salish will also be a little higher when all states are released but are pretty much isolated to Washington, Oregon & British Columbia where they are native.

Immigration and Poverty in America's Suburbs

Read More: http://www.brookings.edu/papers/2011...on_singer.aspx

Quote:
As the foreign-born have grown more numerous, they have dispersed geographically. Some metropolitan areas have become immigrant gateways for the first time. And within many metropolitan areas, increasing numbers of immigrants have settled in suburban communities, where they were once only a sparse presence. Meanwhile, another change has been taking place on the metropolitan landscape: poverty is on the rise in the suburbs.

An analysis of poverty levels among U.S.-born and foreign-born residents in the nation’s 95 largest metropolitan areas in 2000 and 2009 shows that:

Foreign-born residents of America’s suburbs experienced markedly higher poverty rates (14.1 percent) than the U.S. born (9.8 percent) in 2009. The 2.7 million foreign-born poor in the suburbs represented one of every five suburban residents living in poverty.

Immigrants accounted for almost a third (30 percent) of overall population growth in the suburbs from 2000 to 2009, but less than a fifth (17 percent) of the increase in the poor population. The suburbanization of poverty accelerated most among the U.S. born who accounted for 83 percent of the growth in suburban poverty.

Between 2000 and 2009 immigrants contributed more to the growth of the suburban poor population in the South than in other regions. In Washington, D.C., 40 percent of the growth in the suburban poor was due to immigrants, while they contributed just 11 percent in Detroit. In 2009, immigrants made up the highest share of suburban poor in the West (27 percent) and the lowest in the Midwest (10 percent). In Miami, Los Angeles, McAllen, and Fresno, immigrants made up more than one third of the poor population living in suburbs.

The West was the only region where the poverty rate of suburban immigrants decreased between 2000 and 2009. Atlanta saw the largest increase in its suburban immigrant poverty rate (6.5 percentage points) while three large immigrant destinations—McAllen, Los Angeles, and Riverside—experienced decreases.

Census tracks 20 years of sweeping change

Read More: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/...s-change_n.htm

Quote:
The USA is bigger, older, more Hispanic and Asian and less wedded to marriage and traditional families than it was in 1990. It also is less enamored of kids, more embracing of several generations living under one roof, more inclusive of same-sex couples, more cognizant of multiracial identities, more suburban, less rural and leaning more to the South and West.

Results of the 2010 Census have been pouring out all year, an avalanche of statistics detailing the population characteristics of states, counties and cities. But the Census represents more than just a current snapshot.

The end of the first decade of the 21st century marks a turning point in the nation's social, cultural, geographic, racial and ethnic fabric. It's a shift so profound that it reveals an America that seemed unlikely a mere 20 years ago — one that will influence the nation for years to come in everything from who is elected to run the country, states and cities to what type of houses will be built and where.

Striking Change in Bedford-Stuyvesant as the White Population Soars

Read More: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/05/ny...pagewanted=all

Quote:
.....

Overshadowed by Harlem’s racial metamorphosis since 2000, an even more striking evolution has occurred in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Over all, the neighborhood is now barely 60 percent black — down from 75 percent a decade ago. But in the older Bedford section west of Throop Avenue, according to the 2010 census, blacks have recently become a minority of the population for the first time in 50 years. “Both the fall of the crime rate and the improvement of the subway were conditions that made this neighborhood more attractive to people who might not have considered living there in the past,” said John H. Mollenkopf, director of the Center for Urban Research at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

- In the past decade, the black population of Bedford dropped to 34,000 from 40,000, or to 49 percent from 69 percent. Meanwhile, the number of whites grew to more than 18,000, up from just over 2,000, or to 26 percent, up from 4 percent. From 2000 to 2010, the white population soared 633 percent — the biggest percentage increase of any major racial or ethnic group in any New York City neighborhood. In Central Harlem, meanwhile, the number of whites rose 400 percent, increasing their share of the population to 10 percent, up from 2 percent.

- “In the 2010 census, the first thing we noticed was how the concentrations in many traditional black and white areas dropped off across so many blocks,” said Steven Romalewski, director of the mapping service of the Center for Urban Research at CUNY’s Graduate Center, which analyzed the census results block by block. In Brooklyn, he said, “you can see how the white population, for example, is shifting eastward into traditionally black areas, while blacks are also moving eastward, especially to Flatlands and Canarsie.”

- “You’re getting new money, new people, you get different types of services and stores, and you get more police protection,” he said. “Homeowners are doing well, but if you’re a renter, those prices have gone up also and that has pushed some people into moving out. Michael Guerra, executive vice president of Prudential Douglas Elliman and its Brooklyn sales director, said the neighborhood was attracting students from the nearby Pratt Institute, as well as “couples and singles who are looking for more value and a segment of pioneers who think there’s a long-term upside.”

Why does this article assume that SF's dropping black population means it has a rising white population? SF's non-hispanic white population dropped between 2000 and 2010, just as the black population did. Asians and Latinos are the groups growing in SF (and this dropping black/white and rising Asian/Latino trend in SF has been going on since 1970).

==============================

US Island Areas excluding Puerto Rico (& Hawaii of course). The first numbers are of 2010 population counts -- the other is of 2000 followed by population change & percent change.

2010 2000
American Samoa 55,519 57,291 (-1,772) -3.09%
Guam 159,358 154,805 (+4,553) 2.94%
Northern Mariana Islands, Commonwealth of the 53,883 69,221 (-15,338) -22.16%
U.S. Virgin Islands 106,405 108,612 (-2,207) -2.03%

There appears to be a continued exodus of islanders as was the case with P.R. over the last 10 or so years (except for Guam). As far as I know, each of these places have fairly high birth rates but they're losing people at a much higher rate. California, Hawaii, Washington State, Utah, Nevada & Alaska are basically the primary destinations for American Samoans. Chamorros (from Guam & Northern Mariana Islands) continue to migrate to nearly all corners of the country but primarily California, Washington, Hawaii, Texas, etc. US Virgin Islanders mainly settle in the East like Florida, New York, etc. However, i'm almost certain that the majority of the people that have out-migrated from the Northern Mariana Islands are the foreign-born (58% of the pop. in 2000) most of which worked in the garment industry which shuttered many business in the Commonwealth over the last decade.
