Personally, I would've gone for the DA.
Yeah, it is a bit of a disappointment...I do stand correct though...It is 4 floors PLUS a penthouse!!! (Note feigned enthusiasm)

I was trying to find where I had posted this before. I was wrong about dropping the height for the diamonds project (or at least, if i am right, its a fluke ) The renderings I had seen were for the St. Leonard's site across the street. My bad...

The Sad State of Uptown Halifax

This project has been such a disappointment to me, you read the title of the thread as Theatre Lofts and you get this idea of a aged looking building or at least mock-aged looking building renovated to lofts instead we get vinyl siding and cinder blocks. For all the heritage wing-nuts out there, they always seem to be up in arms about the height of a building but miss the key points. I love Halifax for its historical significance and older streetscapes. I feel there should be a moratorium of vinyl siding on the peninsula, IT LOOKS TERRIBLE and disrupts the continuity of a street when it is one of the only buildings on a major thoroughfare. Even all the new buildings in the suburbs don't use it because it is esthetically unpleasing to the eye and this building is using it because the developer can't afford a better material at 4 floors and a penthouse.

I'm liking it.

Don't think those're cinder blocks on the main level - potentially the same stone the architect used on the building in the hydrostone with the starbucks in it. And my guess is that it's some sort of cementitious plank on the rooftop garden level, with nice modern corrugated metal (nice and modern for now... we'll see if it's been detailed not to stain and get all nasty within a few months) above.

Could be going faster, but I think it's an appropriate response to the site.

I was going to say.. the materials are inexpensive but they are nicer than vinyl siding and cinder block. In fact this is a pretty good way to go for projects with a limited budget.

The garage door is weird but overall I think this project is great for the street. There are about half a dozen other medium-scale projects in the works for Gottingen. With those I think there will be more demand for renovating some of the run-down older buildings and the street will come together a lot. More population around the Hydrostone area will also help.

The unusual part is the difference in window trim colour between the street windows and court-facing windows and doors. Also the front windows have transoms and the court yard windows do not. Looks a little odd (different styles, colours and heights) given both windows are equally prominent when viewed from the street.

Must have been a sale at Happy Harrys for the court-yard windows and doors.

This building is a disaster as is Falkland. The scam is to use cheap materials and mix them up to give it an artistic twist to dupe the public. All of this was obvious from the renderings and should have been averted.
  • the design is cheap/shallow
  • the materials are cheap
  • the overall curb appeal is cheap
  • the craftsmanship is really, really cheap
  • this is an eyesore that sould not be permitted and this will continue until council realizes what a mockery these shoddy developments are making of this once great city
  • I think it should be torn down

Ick.

I bet it will look really impressive once the boyz in the hood plaster graffiti vandalism all over those cheap panels.

The metal siding looks like it's been applied unevenly. The lower sections are a little better.

Since this building is under 5 stories, council and the heritage goonies will love it by default. Heck, they could have used a polka dots with zebra stripes pattern for the exterior and no one would say anything!

It's bad enough to have to look at this cheap ugly eysore but the fact that it isn't even constructed properly means it should be investigated more closely by the building inspector and then changes ordered.

Two prime sites on Gottingen have now been destroyed.
