Nice video on the SELRT and impressive aerials.

Dirt and silt will build up around and behind it... And after a few years Accidental Beach will be established for good.

Yesterday I took the extended fam on a ride from Millwoods to 102st and back.

The good
-Mom loved how clean, 'airy' and bright it was - the windows are HUGE
-Everyone loved the simplicity but effectiveness of the stations
-It felt very 'big city'
-For a quasi holiday 3pm train it was 65-75% full which was wonderful to see
-No issues on the train or at any station
-For my 7yr old nephew, he was in heaven with the various hill climbs, elevated views/station, 'big ski hill down to the river' and the tunnel *chefs kiss*
-It was smooth, ~35min door to door and comfortable

The Bad
-Trying to buy 3 adult, 1 child and 1 senior passes at the ARC booth was idiotic in nature and not effective, intuitive or efficient. Seriously.
-How many idiot drivers were in front of the stop lines which caused us to slow and honk repeatedly about 6-7 times heading Downtown.
-Interior audio for station advisory volume was all over the place? You could barely hear it at times and then a few were very loud.
-The closing door audible noise was incredibly invasive and annoying for those of us sitting near the doors.

The ugly
-What's up with the lack of pigeon control (Churchill station) tactics and cleaning? It was disgusting and with very few places to sit outside because of excrement. Seriously awful. It made the new station look like a septic tank in many places.

-Most of the Churchill mini shelters were taken by people passed out, actively doing drugs or smoking something which forced out to remain outside.

Overall we were all impressed and I firmly believe that much of my family had their LRT and even somewhat of their Downtown perceptions move into a more positive light given all of the negative reports of late.

^ So when they did all the testing of this train did they not look at the bad items you mentioned?

probably not.

I was on the train Boxing Day morning from the Churchill to Davies stops and I agree with the pigeon issue at Churchill - there was A LOT of pigeon poo all over. Thankfully, all it should take is instaling those spiky bird deterrents and hopefully they will avoid the stop after that.

That'll be the solution. 'Bird control' measures are usually the last thing you think of on any project. It's also tough to predict where they may or may not create a nuisance.

Yes and no. This is a location with a very high probability of pigeon nesting/roosting/chillin' and that these stations have been there for what, 2yrs and this is still not responded to is simply unacceptable.

It's a brand new system and looks like shit at our main/premier above grade system.

There were layers upon layers of shit, with most benches, lean-toos and main posts absolutely disgusting.

Once again, little care or accountability.

Exclamation

And this is what 27% of Edmonton's Electorate voted for. It's a broken record at this point. Get out and vote for real people who are adults who care about (EDMONTON). And take care of the basics at least. It's like we have the High school D team representing us now. I have never seen such an unqualified pretend mayor and most on council in my life. At this point I will take a AI mayor and council.

Keep in mind that for the SELRT, TransEd is responsible for the operation and maintenance, but that is likely a 'design change' and scope change.

I think it's unfortunately the land owners, they have been handed a gift by the citizens in the form of a massive subsidy in the LRT and available up zoning for their land (some just held for decades some actually purchased recently).
Will they actually be able to make their projects viable? So far, it's not a great track record. Strathearn is on something like year 18 and all they managed to do is spend money on zoning multiple times and tear down a strip mall (which ironically was the most leased and active it had been in a decade despite covid).
Regency has one tower built, at their pace it will be 20 years to build out Holyrood.
Bonnie Doon mall shows no signs of redeveloping, there's actually decent money being spent on the current hard escaping and some minor improvements to the mall itself.
If you can't make a go of it with the LRT on your door, I'm not sure what is going to crack that egg

^um, no. it's not the land owners/ developers. it's the market. and it clearly show edmontonians don't want to live in condos. and to build expensive concrete-rental towers requires lenders willing to lend to such a project. and that will only happen if they forecast decent a return on investment.

i know, for the last 20 years, there's been a push to get more people into condos/ apt style living. but that won't happen, until the single family home market becomes unattainable.

and, i'm sorry, despite what the transit boosters keep on saying, transit is still seen an an option of last resort. until the city addresses issues of safety, cleanliness, efficiency and speed.

People buy condos built in the outskirts of town in droves, so it is not that the market cannot support it.

https://edmontonjournal.com/life/hom...es-in-edmonton

As stated, it is the landowners. Because the prices in general are lower, the returns are slimmer so developers would rather chase easy profits in other overheated markets. But it is by no means an profitable venture and on the flip side there is no penalty to land speculation and holding/flipping. The situation should improve somewhat once the tax on derelict/vacant lots kick in.

As for the bird poop situation at Churchill, people feed the birds there so it all boils down to the same old question on allowing homeless to take over.

I took the Capital Line from Stadium to Churchill and back for the 9 PM fireworks last night and it was a good experience - very VERY busy but the trains and operators coped well. There was a ton of police, peace officers, security etc. around the station and Churchill Square so no riff raff was present (but also large crowds help 'dilute' things). Lots of young families (including mine) out last night, which was great to see.

Yes, as a people-moving exercise ETS performed very well.

Come to think of it, Blatchford should be used as an events PnR if buildout continues to be delayed.

The text is a simple good option, but I fear , It's not that good
I always double check with Google Maps. The text thing is nice but nowhere near as accurate as Google Maps.

Would you encourage your kids to use this facility unaccompanied?
