Hamilton City Hall?!? That's not a very flattering pic, but it really is a modernist masterpiece:

You find some great shit (truly, some of the worst that this country has to offer), but it feels like you also cast an excessively wide net that at times lumps in just about everything built after 1950.

Yeah I also like Hamilton City Hall.

That condo built over the church is iust awful though. That should be its own category in the ugly thread.

Fair enough. I know some people who dislike it and some people who do like it.

The condo built over the church is offensive. It would be less bad if they tried to integrate the church into the condos design (since I personally love the church in question demolishing it would be just as bad imo) but no instead we get a glassy slab plopped right on top of it. Just awful.

Apparently the project died back in may though so I think Hamilton dodged a bullet.

This mansard monster in Kensington also ate up an old church. But its better than the Hamilton one imo because at least it uses brick and seems to make an effort to incorporate it into the design.

Old vs new. Sadly they clash

Not before the church was torn down though. Just the facade remains. Calgary has lost untold number of historic buildings to developments that never occurred. The most galling in recent memory being the south block of the Bow which levelled the York Hotel but promised to preserve the facade and integrate it into a cultural building. 11 years later and all that’s there is a glorified deck. They got to build their massive parkade by dangling the carrot of a cultural space and got away with tearing down a historic building for additional parking.

Toronto has the same problem. I actually like the EY Tower but the way they preserved an old skyscraper is pretty bad.

Theres also One Bedfords use of the John Lyle Studio.

It may just be Torontos largest middle finger to heritage ever.

Landmark Place looks like the phallus a Transformer would have. The problems with Chateau Royale start with placing a feminine adjective after a masculine noun, but from what I've heard, they don't end there.

Sherwood doesn't get to claim that it's a prison, though. That honour belongs to my alma mater, Sir John A Macdonald, which is notorious in Hamilton for how much it looks like the jail.

Hard to tell which is which.

Ouch that does look like a jail. I always called Landmark Place a penis/air traffic control tower hybrid.

Vaughan never fails to impress in the fugly category does it? Here’s their Giant Transformer that wants to eat us all.....I mean Secondary School.

Even without that face it’s still pretty bad.

The only saving grace is that the insides pretty cool.

First I’ve ever heard of anyone disliking it. I thought it’s merits were widely recognized.

I'm unsure of where you heard that....the developer did a pretty fair job of integrating the façade, they kept and retained a good few features of the building, like the entranceway lights, lights on the sides, and the door (though I may be mistaken). The new building is set back a bit as well which helps distinguish both structures, although I don't see how a further set back could be justified economically for the tenants.

BTW, you know what's really upsetting about Star Wars? The fact that brave pure Jedis have to be single like Catholic priests still have to be nowadays.

I mean, it's not even so much about their naive and cheesy scripts and dialogues that are actually hilarious sometimes.
You just can't expect them all to be Quentin Tarantino after all, even when they spend loads of money to produce their space operas and random blockbusters.

But hell, they won't even grant them the right to fuck form time to time. Can you believe it? That's outrageous, retarded.
Where is life, where are children when no one fucks? I just don't know.
And that's just wrong.

Sheraton Center reminds me of a giant concrete prison.
