I would have preferred Tempe as well, I'm a Tempe resident that voted for it. But wasn't meant to be. Is it a lost opportunity, not sure, the team says the majority of their season ticket holders are in North Scottsdale. If that's right, they're probably heading to a great spot. I can be there from Tempe in about 20 minutes so it's okay, not the best, but it can work a lot better than Glendale.

Also, that's an interesting spot for this facility. It's close, but not really close enough, to Footprint Center. It is only about 1/3 of a mile from the arena, but it doesn't seem like a very pleasant walk for players and coaches/executives so they'll likely just drive.

That area of the "southeastern Warehouse District" is honestly probably the best part of the entirety of the Warehouse District, although overall the WD sucks so it's not a hard statement to make.

Yes, but that doesn't mean the Mercury should train in the same facility. The end of NBA season overlaps with the start of WNBA training, so there's a potential they could both need the facility at the same time. The agreement with the city to help fund the arena renovations required the Suns and Mercury to make substantial investments within Phoenix city limits. Both locations meet that description.

Also, I think part of the reason the Suns training facility is at 44th St & Camelback is the proximity to Paradise Valley, where a lot of players live. WNBA atheletes make much less, so they're probably living throughout the metropolitan area, making a central location better for them.

I'm not a big fan of either location, but Tempe would have been better. It sounds like we're getting more sports sprawl, a sort of Westgate 2.0, only in a location that is closer to the east side of town.

This is probably what saves the new location -- the proximity to the fan base.

Don't forget a major use of this new arena will likely be a premier concert venue in Scottsdale. Glendale should be concerned because artists will certainly prefer to play there over Westgate.

Moving somewhere towards the East Valley makes sense for the Yotes, I guess? Do a lot of Canadian snowbirds go to games and if so, do we know their dispersal throughout the Valley? I swear half the province of Saskatchewan is in Mesa during the winter months and if they're hard up for hockey, North Scottsdale is a hell of a lot closer (?) than Glendale/Westgate.

Near Scottsdale, but within Phoenix city limits. The venue would no doubt market itself as "in Scottsdale," just like so many resorts on the east side of Phoenix. Fortunately, any tax revenue generated would flow to Phoenix.

City of Phoenix/Sky Harbor played the long-game on this one and helped derail the Tempe proposal, eliminated any potential competition that close to Footprint Center/DTPHX, and in the end, will get to keep the additional tax revenue if built.

Bravo, Phoenix, bravo.

/\ The first thing I notice in the renderings is the giant "PHOENIX" on top of the building. IFFF, this all goes through, I wonder if they're planning on going back to their original "Phoenix Coyotes" name. I always hate sports teams being named after entire states, especially here. Basically just trying to pander to everyone. However, they've basically seemingly burned bridges or been screwed-over by Scottsdale, Glendale, and now Tempe. Maybe if this site in Phoenix sticks, they are going to rebrand as the Phoenix Coyotes. ???

Def agree with that. Between the Coyotes, Diamondbacks, and Cardinals there are too many teams that play with the state name and that's lame.

In my ideal world, that type of name change would be a condition for the city agreeing to any sort of three-way deal with the Diamondbacks and Maricopa County.

Every time I think of the quagmire that is Chase Field I just don't understand where the political will would come from to renovate it. A 3-way deal with the county seems to add an order of magnitude more complexity.

A sales tax seems irresponsible, jacking up property taxes is out of the question. Given that Maricopa County never bonds out and to my knowledge hasn't started saving any money, one option would be for Phoenix to issue bonds sort of like it did with the Sheraton and eat any losses. That is a bitter, expensive cup of tea to sip tho.

It’s easy, you make an entertainment district combined with the CC across the street. The consultant is coming in to plan it all out. I can see it now—

- 3-5 towers ranging from 200-600’
- Combination of hotels, condos, apartments, convention space, retail district, and gasp (the first downtown casino)
- Include the Science Center space and expand to build the world’s largest natural history museum.
- Add a rooftop park and community open space to the top of the expanded south building convention center.

If you build it, they will come.
