I thought this thread was for strip malls and stuff.
You are welcome to post some strip malls and stuff.

The only thing more common than an abandoned KFC is an abandoned Burger Thing.
can't unsee:

I almost thought that was the abandoned KFC in Cochrane ON until I noticed the hill behind. This one was located where 3rd Avenue and 2nd Avenue meet so that 2nd Ave sign in the Alberta location kind of took me by surprise.
Cochrane ON and Cochrane AB sometimes get confused for one another when people do searches for restaurants, stores, motels and the movie theatre. I've heard of people trying to find those businesses using a GPS or phone and ending up at a house. I've also heard that hotel reservations have been made for the wrong Cochrane.
odd for sure, but looks like the Taj Mahal next to some of the dreck from Welland, Waterloo, and London

You see this, and at first glance it's unremarkable...
Sure, the top floor's window trim looks cheap as fuck, and the longer you look at any of it the less normal it is...
...but you wouldn't expect, as Vid described it, the architectural equivalent of a rendering error.
...
It's not too uncommon to have "fake" rooflines, and it can be much more putrid than this one, which is at least real but deceptive. I think it's an old house that was altered in some way to appear faux heritage. But the first thing I noticed is that the entrance door looks unnaturally small and short, and has no glass or trim surrounding it as if it were a utility door. (It also looks like they misplaced the plastic muntin bars for the top window.)
I like that Niagara isn't just a tourist strip but has real neighbourhoods. I try to enter from residential streets rather than the major roads. I like the immediate contrast from regular houses to tacky and flashy signs and buildings on Clifton Hill. Those houses aren't ugly though.
There's some ugly abandoned buildings in Downtown NF, but due to them being at the terminus of the main street, and being only a few, I think it adds to the character of the place and makes it visually appealing. Though that's the first thing you see when you get off of the bus or train. And I find it funny that you see this pretty looking e-bike shop right across from there. I thought why would this be located there but then realized it's so passengers can go straight from the bus or train and onto a bike. Though it's not like Downtown is around the corner from the entertainment part of town. You gotta put in some literal leg work to get down that way. I often try to make my way Downtown before I head home from the falls.
As dire as that one section of Downtown looks, the rest of Queen Street is everything I like about the main strips of a town. Gateway signs, string lights, flower pots, etc. But, there were like three people outside at 6pm on a Saturday and two were homeless or mentally ill. I remember there was a vacancy problem but I was pleasantly surprised of how occupied the storefronts were.
The biggest abandoned building though is actually in the tourist area. The hotel that never came to be, going back to 2008.

How bout y'all start a separate MAGA / redneck bashing thread? I want to see bad renovations and clockzillas.
This house, maybe isn't quite "ugly", but they took what was likely a classic brick farmhouse and did their very best to add every "McMansion" feature they could. Stucco, faux stone, overbearing porch gable, entrance gate... it's hard to see all of it in the streetview shot, but I drive past it every day and just shake my head a little.

This thread is not for pointing out offensive opinions outside of architecture, planning and design. This thread is not for pointing out people in poor health or people with limited design choices.
This thread is about pointing towards things we build that are shoddy, not prepared for display, or misguided theories of form or function.

Edit: Yup, if you go back to 2014 or older it is just a nice brick house.
That is a truly awful renovation. They grafted a separate garage house onto the side and ruined the beautiful brick with awful beige stucco. The proportions of the old house underneath are the only saving grace. The new addition is like Kuato from Total Recall.

Yeah it was great. After they got sued they took the Budway sign down, broke up the lettering and it reopened as BUD S and just rebranded everything with the jank crooked S they made work with the "new" sign. It was amazingly ugly.

I must have driven past that probably 20 times since 2012 but often in the dark. I'll have to look out for it next time I'm there. There are a lot of ugly McMansions in that general area and lots of strip development.

I think I read about it, a great way to get publicity but probably unintended. That may have been a typical dreggy location for that years ago, but now there is much more competition and they are found everywhere with good locations in the best areas.
