Bigtime is free to say what he wants but I think he's being blind to Nenshi's many faults.

The poll up top should have included the choice "Not Nenshi" as that is how many people will be voting. This election is shaping up to be an exact repeat of the 2015 provincial election. We're not voting for who we want to be mayor, we're voting to punish Nenshi. I just wish we had a better replacement candidates. The one good thing about this election compared to 2015 is that the mayor has limited power compared to the premier. With it looking like most of council will get reelected hopefully they don't do anything to radical.

This election is just amazing. Check out this latest find. Turns out the firm the Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun keep on using is not even sanctioned. They were booted form the national association that deals with data research:

https://mria-arim.ca/sites/default/u...%20Posting.pdf

Specifically:
---
The Adjudication Panel found that Mainstreet Research violated
1. Article 1 (Basic Principles)
2. Article 2 (Honesty)
3. Article 3 (Professional Responsibility) and
4. Article 11 (Publishing Findings)
---
Suspension of MRIA Membership
Mr. Quito Maggi and Mainstreet Research have not complied with the terms of the sanction. Consequently, the MRIA has suspended the membership of Mr. Maggi and Mainstreet Research from the organization, and they must comply with the conditions of the sanction before the lifting of the suspension is reviewed.

Do some more research and the above comes across as being very sketchy. By the way MRIA isn't a sanctioning body and the matter is before the courts.

"Mainstreet Research sets record straight on MRIA decision"

“Mainstreet Research adheres to the highest internationally recognized standards for quality and accuracy in polling and public opinion research. Recently, the Canadian industry association, MRIA, published its decision in a dispute between Mainstreet and another pollster. That decision is being disputed in court, but it must be made clear that Mainstreet has not been suspended as a member of MRIA, as we purposely never renewed our membership in November of 2016. Furthermore, the MRIA decision is related to an opinion given by myself on another pollster’s work, and does not reflect on Mainstreet’s work in the least.

“MRIA’s decision to publish false and defamatory information about Mainstreet has little to do with the matter in dispute, and everything to do with an ongoing campaign to discredit Canada’s most accurate pollster, Mainstreet Research. We will take immediate legal action to correct the record, but stand on our record as the only pollster that accurately called the outcome of the last federal election, the outcome of the last BC election, and others. Despite our decision to not participate in MRIA, we remain firmly committed to the highest standards that our clients and the public have come to expect from our work, and our results will continue to demonstrate that level of excellence.”
...

Mainstreet & MRIA facts:
• MRIA is not a governing body; it is a voluntary industry association, of which Mainstreet is not a member;
• MRIA made no finding regarding the accuracy of Mainstreet Polling;
• MRIA made no finding regarding the accuracy of the Illumina Research poll;
• The only findings were related to MRIA’s opinion of our public comments about the research conducted by Illumina Research;
• Anyone using the findings to cast doubt on the credibility of Mainstreet Research is subject to legal action;
• Mainstreet Research continues to believe that Illumina poll results showing 95-99% citizen satisfaction of the Calgary Police Service are not believable;
• Mainstreet strongly objects to MRIA trying to censor the opinions of its members and others in the industry, in an effort to protect pollsters from fair criticism;
• In order to maintain the confidence of our clients and the general public in our ability to deliver free and fair comments on issues of the day, Mainstreet will continue to abstain from membership in MRIA.
...

Complete statement with detailed background on the complaint can be found at https://www.mainstreetresearch.ca/ma...mria-decision/.

Posting a statement from the firm that is producing purportedly false data proves very little. I think the national body's statement about Mainstreet speaks volumes.

You seem to know mainstreet really quite well :p

It will be curious to see if Bill Smith's stance on the Green Line, SW BRT and South Crosstown BRT end up hurting or helping him this election. Here's a great summary of some of the stuff that Bill Smith said last week about the Green Line. My guess is it's going to cost him some votes. Click the link for the full blog post that includes Smith's quotes.

Bill Smith and the Green Line
October 7, 2017 By LRTOTG

This week’s comments by Calgary mayoral candidate Bill Smith about the Green Line LRT project left us not only scratching our heads, but concerned about the future of the project. In comments to the media, Bill Smith said that when it comes to the Green Line he’s the man with no plan wanting to build a train to nowhere, while pitting two halves of the city against each other...

I don’t think it’ll make much difference to be honest. Most of the people voting for him are really voting against Nenshi.

If you don’t like Nenshi, it’s easier to vote for the person who has a chance to knock him out, and live with the fact that the mayor is only one vote in council. Do you vote in someone you hate or sacrifice a council vote to get rid of said person that you hate?

I bet by the time election time rolls around Chabot will be down to 2% support.

Can anyone here planning on voting out Nenshi articulate why you dislike him so much and how Bill Smith will be better? The recurring theme I seem to hear is that Nenshi is arrogant. Is Bill Smith not being incredibly arrogant, not to mention stupid for proclaiming that the 5 plus years of consultation on the green line matter less than his uneducated gut feeling?

Voting in an incompetent puppet to wealthy special interests because you personally don’t like the current mayor who has proven he actually knows the ins and outs of the job is reckless and irresponsible. You can tell yourself ‘he’s just one vote’ but so is Nenshi. By your own logic you have just proven it’s personal and you don’t in fact care about the real consequences of putting an ignoramus in the mayor’s office. If you truly are conservative and care about your tax dollars how can you feel good about a candidate who is very likely bankrolled by CSEC billionaires and the likes of Cal Wenzel who will capitulate to their every demand and have taxpayers cover the shortfall? How can you rationalize him likely throwing a wrench into plans for the greenline lrt that has been talked about ad nauseum for the better part of a decade and finally has a chance of being built? Your hypocrisy and petty vendictiveness is showing. Voting in Bill Smith will have lasting negative consequences.

This new poll suggests the specific demographic where Smith was most ahead of Nenshi was the 18 to 34 year olds, the specific group that is most pro-Nenshi. This poll by Quito, who apparently was kicked off the national research data association, says the 18-34 group is 61% Smith and 25% Nenshi.

Apparently Post-Media has done this before. They purposefully had put out false information on Arthur Kent causing Arthur to lose an election a few years back. Post-Media lost in court, which concluded they were in the wrong. Looks like scorpions just have this thing in their character.

MRIA is a voluntary body. The Mainstreet statement speaks volumes about how sketchy MRIA is and fully explains that their work has never been questioned. Do some background research before carpet bombing us with material that often has no basis in fact like in this case.

I'll be embarrassed for our city if Smith gets in. It does have echoes of Ford cancelling transit projects when Toronto needed them most and permanently costing the city.

In that case, why was Mainstreet paying dues to be a member?

It is like you're counting on a quote from Donald Trump in assessing Donald Trump.

When it comes to Postmedia surveys, let's not forget this little detail:

Quote:
Mr. King had a 30-year career in the newspaper industry, including as President and Publisher of the Calgary Herald from 1996 to 1999 and Publisher of the Calgary Sun from 1988 to 1996. He has also held other management positions in the newspaper business, including President and Publisher of Pacific Press in Vancouver, which operates the Vancouver Province and Vancouver Sun, General Manager of the Edmonton Sun, Vice-President of Toronto Sun Publishing Corporation and General Manager of United Press Canada.

I'm honestly surprised this hasn't gotten more play but people are fooling themselves if they don't think that Ken King still doesn't have influence at Postmedia Group.

Ken King's influence is undoubted. The Postmedia editorial team makes the decisions based on what he tells them. He just needs to pick up the phone. His long-standing friendship with Gillian Steward, who used to be Herald editor-in-chief, was also leveraged to get the anti-Nenshi article in the Toronto Star. Godfrey is a long-time collaborator with several of the Flames owners, and particularly the developers that are coordinating with the Flames.

Hmm, a lot of people used that same logic in the last provincial election in Alberta and look how that turned out.

I was prepared to vote for someone else other than Nenshi but Smith really disappointed me. There is nothing appealing about a candidate who genuinely wants to make transit worse for this city, even when the Green Line LRT already has provincial/federal funding.

Nenshi it is.

With Nenshi, while he might annoy a few people, he is thoughtful, smart, and makes logical defensible decisions. With Smith, you have a bought candidate who is on record as intending to increase residential taxes in support of his big business backers.
