The reversal on toll roads is very annoying. That was one thing I actually thought Texas was doing right: Make the people that use the freeway pay for it. The toll lane on MOPAC was also a fantastic addition that actually accomplished a lot for transit.
I'm still wondering how this is going to affect the Red Line Service during construction. I assume the DT Station will have reopened before construction starts and then it'll probably close again during construction of the new bridge that'll be necessary.
The fact that they are designing this with the potential to be capped in the future makes me entirely on board with this proposal. Cap or not, burying the freeway through downtown is a must.

As a reminder, this is what it would look like with caps. These are the same thing as the video that came out last year except that video doesn't have caps. Obviously elements of the design are subject to change.
It is really hard to fathom the amount of work this will take. and time.....and money. I wouldn't doubt it the time line was 10-15 years from the first shovel to the last tree planted. I trust TXDOT knows their numbers, at least they should by now, but I wouldn't be surprised if that number ballooned.
I freaking love it, and really want those cap parks.
You gotta cap it though. Burying it without capping it would be a huge wasted opportunity and a waste of money. Burying it and not capping it would be lame. I would love to see a park up there. Even something simple like Corpus Christi's Shoreline Boulevard that has wide grassy median would be nice, but a full on park would be most ideal. I'm even thinking about the opportunity to have the park meet up with a pedestrian bridge across the lake around Trinity Street or Rainey to connect to the south shore to the Statesman site. Let the park be an extension of those spaces, plus having it connect back to the Waller Creek trail at certain points. There's no reason that couldn't happen.

The city has until August to put a bond on the November ballot for a prop to fund the caps. I would prefer it is not a part of project connect. This would be the best electorate for the caps. If not you would probably need to wait to Nov 2022. I don't think you put it on any of the odd year or may elections.

Haha, I went to Boston recently and checked out the parks on top of their buried highway. They were fantastic. There were kiosks set up with merchants selling things, art installations, fountains, buildings. The possibilities are endless.

I really do think that 10 years of construction will fundamentally change people’s driving behavior. No one will brave I-35 unless it’s life or death. Burbs like Kyle and Buda will explode with things to do to meet live/work/play demand and working from home will increase for sure. Not to mention 130, start buying anything you can close that.
All good things. Let’s get this started. I’ll get my shovel, meet y’all at Holly St in 40.
