The evolution of James N is so exciting. One wonders how high it will climb.

I'd be thrilled if it stayed in its current incarnation but that's just not how neighbourhoods work.

Great news.

Sounds like a fine addition to the lineup. A friend suggests we pay homage to the local water supply: Cootes Paradise Toxic Lager. lol.

I see from another forum here (Rumour Mill) that the Corktown is closing. Would be a marginally possible site for Bay City Brewery and Pub, but the property is listing at $895k.

Health benefits to micro-brews

Good news, I hope.

Another good choice is microbrews, which are healthier than mass-produced cans, because they have more hops. Hops contain polyphenols, which help lower cholesterol, fight cancer and kill viruses.

Donairs@Gage

Very nice Maritime Donairs but not as greasy.
Very clean, attractive decorating, very friendly staff, kitchen not cluttered and organized. Fairly fast and each order prepared individually.
There is a customer loyalty card.
Looks like quality meat and more lean with very little mess. A pleasant surprise and well presented. I will definitely be going back.
Go try a REAL Donair.

Great news about the pub. I love the Brain and work with them often, but sometimes I just want fish and chips and and a pint of guinness. There's nothing for that on the street. Bailey's was awful - no taps and zero beer selection. No wonder they tanked.

A bit quicker than I'd have expected. I don't think the hoarding has even come off yet. I'm curious to see what it will look like. That part of the mall is gonna be radically different with the Anchor Bar and McDonalds on one side and the Nations Fresh food court directly across. Used to be so dead before all this.

Hillbilly Heaven

I saw today that Hillbilly Heaven's second location at 202 King St. E. (formerly Waxy's Deli) has a help-wanted poster.

I still haven't tried the original Upper James location... the controversy
http://www.thespec.com/news/local/ar...ion-bans-co-op
"One sign, for instance, posted on the front door reads, “to better serve you, our staff speaks ENGLISH,” while another placed by the cash register says halal, rice, kebab, shawarma, fries, wings, ¼ chicken, Mexican and burgers are “things we don’t have and never will.”
lowered it in my list of places to try...

Has anyone tried the place since Restaurant Makevoer (I recall when it was featured on Restaurant Makeover... the owner wasn't 100% responsive to their suggestions)?

I don't think the food changed much.

I think his pulled pork is dry, but other than that, it's really good. The brisket is to die for, and the sides he has blow Rolly Rocket's out of the water. He's got this bean salad that's amazing.

He's a prick, and he's doing this shit for attention... but he serves damn good food.

McCartney & Son

Shane McCartney the chef at Jack & Lois is opening McCartney & Son Salad Emporium and Eatery at 282 James St. N. (in the former Atlantic Fish Market).

Should be open as early as this week and features a 50-foot long salad bar.

Hopefully the Emporium will be alcohol-licensed and serving some fine craft beer!

Haven't seen any notices of a liquor license application for McCartney and Son... they were selling beer at the ArtCrawl preview but no salad...

Another James St. N. food establishment just announced (via Dave Kuruc at Mixed Media) is WORK at 337 James St .N.
http://www.facebook.com/workfood?group_id=0
To be located in the former Jamesville Cafe Ltd. space south of This Ain't Hollywood.

James Street North

Dave Kuruc also posted on Facebook that 248 James St. N., the former Bar Michelangelo (the place that has a rack of Italian cassette tapes for sale in the window) is becoming a "Chicken Rotisserie" Restaurant.

While it's always nice to see new places popping up on James North, it is kind of sad to see the traditional Italian and Portuguese shops pushed out as a result of this gentrification.

Not many details out yet but there is also a new restaurant called Work opening in feburary at 337 James North (North of Barton). No idea on the menu, but it's a friend of mine who is opening it. He currently owns the restaurant side of Che, so it won't be burritos and I am sure it will be original.
