This was not too surprising. As architect for a project in Santa Monica we discovered a live conduit in the slab and concrete wall to the roof despite power to the building shut off. We discovered the adjoining property had an easement (for lack of a better word) for their conduit to go the the roof to a sign that no longer existed.

Thanks ER, and yes i did. We don't have too many pictures from the 1920's in our collection( i counted 3 real photos and one that has been reproduced). I also checked the digest and they were dated 1925-1926.. so no luck with Parade info.

GSV
If that's the same building as the Spanish Cafe then i would say it's not original to the building. In the early 90's the Spanish Cafe only had its blade sign which now spells out SPA.

This was going to be a mystery location. . . . but I just realized the seller has the adress-which is written on the back.

eBay

"This is our home at present 1103 West 7 St Los Angeles Calif" Location was confirmed by the seller on a Sanborn map at the NW corner of West 7th Street and Bixel.

Now that we have the address I'd like to know more about the history of this fine looking home.

Let's take a closer look.

Wowsa!

Note the X by the lower level window. Usually that means the owner of the photograph is showing where they live - or in the case of a hotel, where they are staying.
This being a below-ground window could it be a servant's quarter? . .a nanny perhaps. . .or butler? ...... .

X marks the spot.

And here's something else of interest:

Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me I see a mystery animal(?) balanced on the front porch banister.....Also of note; the lady on the right appears to be standing by -what looks like- a pedestal table.

detail

Is there going to be a performance? . .trained monkey . . .miniature dancing bear?

e_r, by 1896, this was the residence of some of the Wilsons of Wilson Block (SE corner Main and 1st) fame. It would take a lot of text to discuss the Wilsons and all their drama and litigation.

May 4, 1910, in the LA Times, one sees:

Can anyone tell me whether this photograph was taken in Los Angeles or in San Francisco?

I'm leaning toward San Francisco.

Here's an odd (mounted) photograph(?) recently found on eBay that appears to be half photo - half drawing.

"EARLY LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA ~ SPRING ST. & 2ND ST. ~ c. - 1910" ($85.00)

eBay Link

I halfway expect to see Jessica Rabbit walking down the street.

I'm guessing that the original photo was too light and someone outlined the lighter parts to make them more visible. I've seen this many times

Not sure about the possible monkey, but the house was built in 1895 by Catherine Wilson, owner of the Wilson Block, as odinthor references below. Looks like it was moved on its lot to face Bixel, becoming 691 S Bixel, in 1922 and then demolished in 1956.

Thanks Mackerm. I didn't know (or maybe I just forgot) that San Diego had a Paris Inn location.

For NLA Newbies: ... The Paris Inn in Los Angeles was located at 210 E. Market Street.

Go here to see the rest of the menu.

Hmm, so what happened to Market Street? If I enter 210 E. Market Street into GSV it takes me down to Long Beach.

A glimpse of the Paris Inn in downtown Los Angeles.

unknown

We've seen this map before but. . .let's pretend we haven't.

As you can see, it's awfully close to the New City Hall.

In fact, one of my favorite advertisements for the Paris Inn has the city hall beacon shining on it.

Market Street used to run from Spring Street to San Pedro Street near the Temple Block. The Amestoy building was on the corner of Market and Main. Market Street can be seen here on the 1921 Baist map.

RECENTLY FOUND ON EBAY.

Has anyone heard of Princess Der Ling?

eBay

She appears to be standing in front of her home. (but I highly doubt she was listed as "Princess Der Ling" in the city directories)

Old-timers knew the portion east of Main (east is at bottom on the above map) as Requena St. Sometime L.A. alcalde and mayor Manuel Requena--a respected Angeleno since the 1830s--had allowed the town to cut the street through his property.

Thanks for the information on Princess Der Ling, Flyingwedge.

I'm amazed by this photograph.

The Qing Dynasty Empress Dowager Cixi of China and her daughters.
