Do we know if this new platform for Cloud Gate is going to have any new "functionality" rather than just a solid space on which the sculpture will sit (e.g., upward lighting, more interesting steps/ramps, water element)? Not that I'd advocate for any of that, but given the extent of construction, it seems that now that we know The Bean has become iconic for Chicago (which we didn't know when it was originally installed) I can imagine they may want to showcase/frame it more elaborately.

The building permit refers to a 2,272SF concession stand. The applicant is one of the owners for Island Party Hut, so it looks like they are building a permanent building after years of operating from decorated shipping containers.

The architect on the permit is listed as Ross Barney, so it should be pretty sharp, design-wise.

Welcoming news from Crain's: With pot shop plan scrapped, Rainforest Cafe site's next phase is unclear

Would be great if Gregory gets his wish.

Given the continued high demand for apartments in River North, “that’s what the site is best suited for,” says Gregory Kirsch, an executive managing director at Cushman & Wakefield, who is not involved with the property.

A non-beige TOD mid-rise that blocks The Farallon would be a great outcome.

Plan To Turn Andersonville Home On Ashland Into Apartments Denied By Alderman

I don't think this has been posted here.
Ald. Vasquez is responding to randos on reddit, and it's fairly entertaining.

Ald Vasquez was a great battle rapper, Optimus Prime. I'm sure he can handle dissention.

The new DPD commissioner, Ciere Boatright, is pretty serious about streamlining the approval process

Boatright, promising to speed up development in the city, flies through confirmation hearing
Quote:
A local real estate executive, tapped to be the next commissioner of Chicago's Department of Planning & Development, promised to leverage her experience as a developer to move projects through the city’s often-arduous approval process more quickly as she sailed through a confirmation hearing
.....
"As a developer, I've experienced, to be completely honest, frustrations working with DPD," she said. "I think I'm uniquely positioned to remove some of those barriers.” Boatright said there is too often “a disconnect with what’s happening outside City Hall,” arguing the department’s decision-making process needs to be “informed what's happening with the affordable housing market, the market rate housing market, industrial market, neighborhood retail, and our big box retailers.”

We have a lot of low-hanging fruit that we can really address to fast track development in an equitable way, that still mitigates risk, but we can get far more shovels in the ground and cut more ribbons,” she said. “I know how to finance deals, I know how to get deals done.”

Clybourn Corridor retail, office building going up for sale at auction

Would love to see someone buy this (on the cheap), tear it down, and put up an apartment building. There definitely has been a recent trend of adding residential in this area, and this is another prime piece of land to continue that. Not sure what current zoning looks like for this property though.
