I had one on the harbourfront in Halifax this past summer. It is a bit pricey and loaded in calories, but boy is it ever tasty!!!!

The Shanghai restaurant on water street is closing on the 24th/25th (can't remember when). Shame, its one of the only few places in town where you can get as close to authentic Chinese food as you can get in St. John's. It's huge inside, so this could open up as another upscale restaurant and/or bar.

It's decent Chinese food, but way expensive, IIRC.

Agreed though the lunch menu seems more affordable. I don't think anyone in the city was willing to pay that much for Chinese food. It was my first time there but my girlfriend did say the quality of the food had gone down which is understandable when we were the only people in the restaurant.

Don Cherry's - Mount Pearl & Freshwater Rd

Saw somebody post on Twitter that the Don Cherry's restaurants in MP & Freshwater Rd have taken down their DC signs & have new names.

Anybody else hear or see this?

I was in at Kents yesterday and noticed that the Don Cherry's in Mt Pearl is now called "Bigs". They have new signage up on the building.

I live next to the freshwater location; I'll check it out when I get a chance. I sure hope not though, it may not be the best food but it's a great place to go, down a few wings and beers, and watch hockey/football/etc.

EDIT: " I heard the contract ended and don cherry's was charging way more for licensing so the owner decided to run his own sports bar chain, but the food will essentially still be DC." - friend on facebook. boo.

Interesting concept! It's like an exotic, upscale version of Hooters haha! Although I'm not sure about the location. From looking at the website it seems as though it's a more "high class" restaurant. I don't know about you but if I was building an upscale restaurant I would certainly not put it in that ugly building or even the general location of a corner store, a few fast food joints and a cheap strip mall all built in 1970

Went to Big's in Mount Pearl with some coworkers last week; I found it to be a huge improvement. Most of the Don's stuff was still on the menu, but they also added quite a bit.

I had Bigs ultimate wings last night; it was actually a slight improvement as well. Everything pretty much stayed the same, but they didn't bathe the wings in sauce; the cutback in sauce made it more manageable. A good improvement IMO.

Also a cost savings move for the restaurant. I guess you can call it a win-win!

I'm gonna miss Club One. It's a decent sized venue to bring in up-and-coming acts that aren't big enough for Mile One. Is there another similar sized venue downtown?

Although, come to think of it, I think The Sheepdogs was the last act I saw there and that was in late 2012, so maybe I won't really miss it too much...
