After a good laugh, not to read too much into the "rumour" but I do find its timing interesting.

Would love to know the cost on one of those glass panels.

Seems similar to these new panels for the Apple Store in Toronto

Quote:
Manufactured by sedak GmbH of Gersthofen, Germany, the massive glazing units are 109.34mm thick, and made up of 6 sheets of 12mm-tick laminated glass with a low-E coating, sandwiching a 16mm insulated air space and 2 sheets of 8mm-thick laminated glass on the inside. A typical unit is 2388mm (7’10”) wide by 11521mm (37′ 9″) high.

Wonder if they can be easily smashed by street thugs.

Worked for a well known global designer company in the past; glazing storefront panels for a high exposure, non flagship location ranged from 30-100k usd per panel (iirc, smaller than those panels), laminated, low iron glass (forgot the specs)

Buildout for a typical mall location (4000 sq ft) would range from 4-6m usd; shop in shops (small pad locations inside department stores like in saks, bloomingdales, HR, etc would still be close to the 1m mark)

Flagship locations such as Rodeo or Fifth Ave renos would range between 5-10m every couple of years

sorry wasnt clear. Glass was about 30-100k per panel depending on the size and specs as required for each location

the 4-6m and 5-10m numbers were for full store interior buildouts or renos without exterior glazing

When they replaced the 96 panes of glass with 15 panes at the Apple NYC glass cube it cost $7 million

Was there any discussion on why they cut off what looked like a foot of the metal roof structure around the entire perimeter?

I saw some workers plasma cutting up there a week or two ago. I have no clue what the reason is.

And people wonder why low-cost window-wall glazing systems using greenish high-iron glass is used so much more frequently than clear low-iron glass.

As a architect colleague in the south would say, "glass is f$@^king expensive, y'all".

I have to say i'm very happy with how this building is coming along. I like the way it addresses the corner and the VAG north plaza and that it doesn't suffocate the public space for the rebuild. Prior iterations of the design had a terrible relationship with Howe St and were missing the element of grandeur. Also glad we're finally getting a flagship Apple Store.

It seems like they squared off the corners.

Yeah, I hadn't noticed that until you mentioned it.
There looks to be less width along the front edge (sides too?) and the corners are not as rounded (comparing old pic above).

More pics by me today.
Yesteday's panels were the short ones above the doorway.

and TD Tower lobby coming along (massive void spaces in the walls):

I assume they won't be able to stick in any panes with heavy rain. It'll be interesting to see the curved pieces on the corner.

Here's one I took while they were in progress of cutting away the edges of the roof. Weird that it happened since the roof edge seemed to be pre-fabricated to fit and then they hacked away at it that left it all jagged and rough at the edges now...
