Why so expensive comparatively to a building like the Shanghai Tower which is taller, has a larger total floor area, and only costs $2.2 billion?

Because a load of political bs that led to so many delays in construction plus it is supposed to be a high quality building with a lot of safety features.

I went down tonight to see the base but they have started with the south side and I couldn't see it without going into the memorial. I really love the mechanical floors vents.

Now that looks nice!! That's what I like, a bigger pic and more progress, so you can get a perspective of how it'll look,, 1 or 2 pieces, u can't tell a thing. It's very impressive. Nice photo, do they still talk about moving messages(crawlers, like on tv) on the base of this bldg with advertsments,, They said they were adding 1000's of LED lights in the base glass, I hope they don't make the base some kind of advertising garbage, I remember reading awhile back, probably quite awhile, they were contemplating moving messages or crawlers if you will, I sure as hell HOPE NOT!!! Uaarkson when will they start these "fins" you're talking about?

It would require LEDs to be fitted behind every face instead of localized on mounts.
This is a good point. The lighting, and more importantly the maintenance of the lighting, would have been far more difficult and ultimately less uniform in appearance than the way it's being done now. And yes, Durst does like the color-changing masts. I just hope they show a little restraint with this mast with the color-changing and just stick with the plan to keep it white most of the time. In my opinion, the white light is more elegant and classy than all of that color-shifting which seems kitchy and tacky to me when it's overdone. This building doesn't need that to draw people's attention.

He definitely likes the color-changing LEDs on his masts. See the BoA building and the Conde Nast building for examples of what he likes to do with masts in NYC. The fixtures atop 1WTC will have RGBW capabilities, but the beacon is all white, thankfully. Can you imagine a color-changing rotating beacon shooting out for miles in all directions??? The skyline would look like a bad circus was going on!

Well, that's most likely just the quality of the camera, I can assure that not undulation will occur when this tower is complete nor has any occured Still looks great though eh?

Only two of the platforms currently up there are permanent (and one of them is on top of the disc structure half-way up).

That is a really good shop though

I imagine the rings won't go up until the temporary platform is gone.
