The six exterior columns can be a bit misleading. There are eight interior columns that transfer quite a bit of the vertical - and lateral - load of the tower into it's 'center', which essentially act like a concrete core, structurally. They just aren't encased in concrete, like we are used to seeing. The engineering here is pretty amazing, don't get me wrong, but it's responding very well to a site that's constrained with the train tracks underneath, and a preview of 175 Park Avenue, which will be similalarly challenged.
