Here are 5 new restaurants to try on Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix soon

https://www.azcentral.com/story/ente...on/4489549002/

Quote:
Downtown Phoenix is home to many restaurants but Roosevelt Row, just north of the downtown core, may be on track to be Phoenix's next dining hub.

The blocks along Roosevelt Street between 7th Street and 7th Avenue have long been recognized as the Roosevelt Row Arts District. And while a handful of art galleries remain along the row, restaurants are moving in at a quick pace.

Two new spots, Josephine and Dvina Modern Fare, opened recently, and more new restaurant openings are on the horizon. Some new concepts will debut for the first time, while other Valley restaurants are moving or expanding to metro Phoenix's up-and-coming dining destination.

Here are 5 new restaurants to try on Roosevelt Row soon.

Josephine

Josephine, located in an all-black bungalow on Portland Street just west of the Cambria Hotel, opened Jan. 3. The chic black, white and brick interior is decorated with art depicting historic female figures, bouquets of dried flowers and white chandeliers.

Chef Ryan Pitt, formerly of Scottsdale fine dining restaurant Cafe Monarch, heads the kitchen. The food is French in style but infused with flavors from cultures around the world. Small bites and wine pairings round out the experience, which is the newest outcome of a collaboration between development company True North Studio and local restaurateur Grace Unger.

Coup de Grace, named after Unger, is a small cocktail bar located in what used to be the garage behind the bungalow, and offers a place for customers to grab a drink before or after dinner at Josephine.

Details: Josephine, 218 E. Portland St., Phoenix.

Dvina Modern Fare

Another recent addition to the Roosevelt Row district is Dvina Modern Fare. The new "progressive Italian eatery" opened Dec. 21.

The small bungalow used to house Rise Craft Coffee + Eatery, which was only open for nine months before closing. The bungalow's front yard has been transformed into a large patio where customers can eat breakfast, lunch or dinner. Menu items include paninis and pasta along with vegan tacos and French toast sliders.

The back bar also serves as a late night spot complete with local DJs playing most nights of the week.

Details: Dvina Modern Fare, 918 N. 5th St., Phoenix.

Chez Gregory

A liquor license application was filed in late November for a restaurant at 719 E. Roosevelt St. The location east of the Circle K gas station on the southeast corner of Roosevelt and 7th Streets is currently a residential house but the application is filled for a restaurant named Chez Gregory.

According to zoning documents from the City of Phoenix, the house is currently being remodeled and the restaurant will open in March.

“Chez Gregory will be a full-service neighborhood restaurant serving the historic Garfield District,” the document says. "The location will brighten a very bleak alley entrance and provide a pleasant transition from the busy Circle K corner to the more residential area."

Details: Chez Gregory, 719 E. Roosevelt St., Phoenix.

Root & Soul at Melo Lounge

Chef Christian Buze originally opened Root & Soul restaurant inside the Desoto Central Market, a collection of restaurants in a historic building on Roosevelt Row. When the market closed in 2018, Buze moved his restaurant to Scottsdale; then the Southern food spot closed in the fall.

Buze told The Arizona Republic in October, however, that he feels like he belongs downtown and plans to return to the Roosevelt Row neighborhood.

The new iteration of Root & Soul, inside the building that used to house Milk Bar, held a soft opening in November. Called The Melo Lounge, the new concept will include a CBD bar and will serve Buze's food. It was scheduled to open in early December. Since then, news has gone quiet at the Melo Lounge.

Details: Melo Lounge, 801 N 3rd St., Phoenix.

All The Little Things

Next on the list of projects from True North Studio is a cocktail and coffee bar called All The Little Things. The concept will be part of True North Studio's project, Knipe Village and will be located inside the Historic Knipe House on 2nd Street north of MonOrchid.

Details: All The Little Things, 1025 N. 2nd St., Phoenix.

Killer Whale Sex Club bar on Roosevelt...

I walked by Killer Whale Sex Club (at 922 N. Sixth St./Roosevelt). Building is surrounded by a fence and looks like it was or is about to be painted. I heard the bar is supposed to open in February.

I don't think I want to go to a place called Killer Whale Sex Club. Is that real?

I just noticed that the Tammie Coe storefront on Roosevelt, which has been closed for several months, now has a banner proclaiming that Hot Daisy Pizza is coming soon. Doing a little digging, this appears to be a new venture from Tammie Coe.

I mentioned this a few months back, they’ve been permitting for placement of the pizza oven and ventilation. A pizza place (by the slice) and Taco Boys is exactly what this end of downtown needs with the influx of bars and drunken groups.

Sorry I missed your earlier post. I agree. A slice shop will be a good addition to Roosevelt.

Why is Tammie no longer baking cookies? What makes her think she can just start whipping up pizzas? Girl is gettin it twisted.

I'm not sure exactly what's going on behind the scenes, but Tammie Coe is still making cakes and cookies for shipping and delivery. I think the only retail location is at Sky Harbor, where it is operated by a concessionaire under license. Also, Tammie Coe is not entirely new to the pizza business. The other half of Tammie Coe is MJ Bread, which was behind the pizza crusts at Federal Pizza when it first opened, although I'm not sure if that relationship is still in place.

Tammy Coe/Slice Shops

Tammy Coe had a booth at last week’s downtown Scottsdale Farmer’s Market, so her product is still out there. As for a slice shop in her current location, I think it’s a great idea. They definitely could use that in the area. Ziggy’s is way too far away. Ironically, another slice shop is going in directly across the street from Ziggy’s, which makes absolutely no sense, IMO (maybe when all the apartments are competed on the north side of Van Buren).

The funny thing is that Via Della (the slice shop on the other side of 5th Avenue) launched its social media way before Ziggy's, but it's taken forever to build out. I've been following Via Della on Instagram for over a year, and it's been such a slow process to see the building renovated. I hope the pizza is worth the wait.

Sorry, I sounded a bit rude there. Lol with so much going on, I don’t expect every post to be remembered. More that this place has been perpetually been under wraps for months and there’s hardly been any movement.

No offense taken. This week was the first time I had noticed the pizza sign. I gave up hope that the cake shop was ever going to reopen a long time ago.

I remember when Tammie Coe opened her bakery on 40th Street, she was the talk of the town because of the decadent and beautiful fondant cakes. Seems like fondant has kind of fallen out of favor for more current trends and getting by on cupcakes and cookies is hard. Smart of her to move to a slice shop especially with all of the nightlife that's starting to develop over there.

Nice travel piece from the Chicago Tribune's travel editor on Phoenix. It's mostly food-related (though it does mention hotels and outdoors activities), so I'll put it here:

A peak into the Jim Ong building on Washington and 11th St and a short interview with Superstition Meadery owners who are opening their tap room here later this year. This area has really struggled with sustaining business/retail outside of firms, surprised (pleasantly) the Concierge Bistro is still kicking.
