Worth noting that West Van is the one municipality in the Lower Mainland with a shrinking population. It's already near-impossible to get there by car, so they're facing an outright brain drain if they continue to block any kind of alternate transit.

It's not growing but it isn't really shrinking either.

AFAIK it's been going down since 2011 (except for 2020, where it went up). That counts as shrinking to me.

Sorry, what? Busy at times, yes, but "near-impossible" is a bit much IMHO.

Window signage is up for 49th Parallel coffee shop on 1st and Lonsdale. Taking over the crappy Waves that was there forever.

Creme Pony finally opened in the alley between Esplanade and 1st just off Lonsdale. Solid Friend Chicken Sandwiches! The donuts look awesome but are a bit too sweet.

The brewery district has taken shape with Streetcar, North Point, Funk House, Beere and La Cerveceria Astilleros. And another brewery, a whiskey place, and a cidery are still to open. Fairly soon you can recreate Leaving Las Vegas all within 2.5 blocks

It is simply impressive how multifaceted and excellent the Shipyards turned out as well. There is constantly a vibe down there now, always something new happening.

Agreed with the vibe at Lonsdale Quay market and the Shipyards these days. On the weekends when I take the seabus from downtown Vancouver to the area, I can really feel the contrast, on how many are just bypassing Vancouver's Waterfront making it generally pretty quiet compared to what is happening at the Northshore, which is attracting a wider range of people, including tourists, families, etc.

Hence my hats off to the City of North Vancouver, which is turning a previously rundown and deserted part of the city to what it is now. Keep up the good work to introduce more innovative projects in the City core. IMO, the best is yet to come, including the highly anticipated Museum.

The shipyards is amazing. And I loved how during covid, they turned the ice skating rink into an covered outdoor small group gathering place with gas firepits.

And now that you can openly drink down there...! double amazing!

Not sure I like it as it does significantly change the character of Horseshoe Bay...

Seems better than a condo tower right in the middle of the village. And if people actually live there year round it might help support businesses in the area.

Assuming, of course, that Horseshoe Bay had a lot of character to begin with. IMO everything south and west (and east) of the village is fair game for developers.

From the Vancouver Sun:

==========

One person dead, another hurt after building collapses in North Vancouver
A demolition crew was working on the site of the former Empire movie theatre
Author of the article:
Scott Brown

One person is dead and another is in hospital after a building partially collapsed at a demolition site in North Vancouver Wednesday morning.

B.C. Emergency Health Services says it receive a report at 8:43 a.m. regarding a structure collapse at the corner of Chesterfield Avenue and West Esplanade.

A demolition crew was working on the site of the former Empire Theatres, which closed in 2019.
Paramedics transported one person to hospital where they are listed in stable condition.
North Vancouver RCMP Sgt. Peter Devries said paramedics also determined another person was been trapped beneath rubble.

“They determined that as a result of catastrophic injuries … this person had died as a result of the collapse,” said North Vancouver RCMP Sgt. Peter Devries. “However, they were not able to recover the person’s body due to the danger.”
North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service has brought in a specialized team to recover the body.

On a related note, I realize that it would be a next-to-impossible challenge to get support in West Vancouver, but at some point there really will need to be a bypass to get bridge/highway through traffic away from the intersection of Taylor Way and Marine Drive. Whether it is a new route, elevated lanes, or whatever, that intersection is only going to get worse and worse. It is exacerbated by Park Royal's haphazard development style, but the adjacent residential sites under construction and proposed won't help either. Too bad this isn't Cities" Skylines; if it were, we could just pick up the entire Park Royal complex and and move it out of the way...

They want to build a new low level road for traffic staying on the North Shore but I don't know why the reserve would want more traffic coming through there. Maybe do a cut/cover tunnel until Capilano Road from the RV park
