Highways In Canada II

A tour of the 3.5-hour drive from St. John's to Goobies (TCH), and on to Marystown, specifically Creston South, to visit my grandmother for her 97th (Burin Peninsula Highway, or Heritage Run, or 210).

I realize after posting this is A LOT. I PROMISE you, as soon as there's a few more posts with photos on this page, I'll spoiler almost all of this.

The TCH is only twinned as far as Whitbourne (45 minutes from St. John's). Then it's mostly three lanes, with the uphill direction having the passing lane. There are still long stretches of just two lanes across the island.















Goobies is where you turn down the Burin Peninsula Highway. The TCH runs almost entirely through the interior (for example, the couple views of ocean from my TCH photos above are, literally, ALL the views of the ocean lol). The next two photos are, like, 15 seconds apart at opposite ends of a left turn.

Is Greco's pizza any good? What about Capt Submarine??

And how does the Swift Current of NF compare to the one in Saskatchewan?

Greco's isn't good, no. But it is decent, and reliable. If Domino's is 100% (yes, that's the sad scale we're at), Greco is 90%.

No idea about Capt. Submarine. They might not be a broadly-available chain locally the way Greco's is, especially outside the city.

Swift Current, NL, is where my babysitter was from. And now that I'm an adult I learned she wasn't actually a babysitter, but a teenage girl beaten by her husband who my parents took in to keep him away from her.

It's a tiny town, one road, hemmed in by bay on one side, and hill on the other. When you see those roads where they just blast two lanes along the side of a mountain face in hillier regions, Swift Current is basically 15 minutes of that, but they squeezed some houses between the road and the hillside.

I was picturing something like that (and it's beautiful) and I've never been to the Swift Current of SK so my question was a little bit tongue-in-cheek... but when I do venture to Newfoundland I will avoid Greco pizza and given the choice, grab a sub instead.

Personally, I'd take Greco over Domino's. Greco's pizza seems a bit less 'manufactured' compared to Domino's.

Still, given the dinning options in Whitbourne junction. I'd go with Mary Brown's, or A&W before Greco. I distaste Subway, and Tim's is only for coffee and a donut (IMO). I heard rumours from the locals, that the old Monty's space at the North Atlantic is becoming a Dairy Queen.

Greco's (and Pizza Delight) are Maritime/Atlantic Canada based chain pizza places. Their main claim to fame is that they had a chance to spread through Atlantic Canada long before the bigger chains ever thought to come out here. And as such they (along with all the independent pizza places) both spread "Donairs" across the region and firmly established "Donairs + Pizza" are a thing as far as Pizza places go out here.

Both are about what you'd expect from a chain restaurant, maybe slightly better. But look for local places if you have a choice and/or no real preference. I'll often go to Grecos for a Donair or oven sub when I want something relatively quick and cheap and basic. (Though I really miss their old style ovensubs. Their current rolls suck).

Has anyone driven the Bella Coola Highway in BC (Highway 20, The Hill, Freedom Road)? I am wondering how you found the descent/climb and your experience in the Bella Coola Valley (it looks gorgeous). The road has an interesting history where the locals built it after the government said it was impossible. In the first 4 miles of "The Hill", it climbs 4000ft (1219.2m).

Great picture! I haven't driven it (yet) but it's been on my "to do" list for decades. I'd be interested in hearing more about the drive as well.

I imagine transportation ministry staff saw all the evidence of rock slides and kiboshed government involvement. Looks like an exhilarating trip, but it would be scary as hell.

Drove on the Confederation a few weeks ago! Always a fun drive, and PEI is a wonderful place too.
