The interminable construction of the new Maternal/Newborn wing at the Moncton Hospital is finally starting to wind down, with opening expected this fall.

With this out of the way, the construction of the new Cardiac wing at the hospital is about to start.

We are extremely excited to announce that construction of the new Coronary Care addition at Horizon’s The Moncton Hospital is set to begin soon!

This construction of this two-story building will see the creation of approximately 2,600 square meters (28,000 square feet) of clinical space on Level 2. This clinical space will include 8 CCU beds, a procedure room, 30 step down beds and all associated services, such as nurse stations, offices, team rooms, utility rooms etc. The addition will also include approximately the same area added on Level 1 that will include: new building services, linen logistics, recycling and refuse disposal space. Mechanical services will be housed in a rooftop penthouse.

So, the cardiac centre will be on the second floor of the new addition, while the first level will contain some non clinical support services that will relocated from elsewhere in the hospital.

There is nothing really earth shattering in this new addition. The clinical services will essentially replicate what is already available in the hospital, but, in a new state of the art facility. There is nothing here to challenge the primacy of the NB Heart Centre at the SJRH.

The new wing will be located in the (former) Arden Street staff parking lot, in behind the Sheldon Rubin Oncology Clinic. This is where I used to park, but I got the heave ho earlier this year, and now park in front of the Ambulatory Care Centre (admittedly a nicer parking lot anyway).

This rendering will give you an idea of the stature of this new addition, and where it will be located. The new building will have essentially no street presence in that it is located in a parking area surrounded by other hospital buildings.



Given how long it took to build the Maternal/Newborn wing, I expect to be retired by the time this new addition opens.

I have been advised by a contact that the expected opening date of the new maternal/newborn wing at the hospital is actually March 2024.

And the saga continues.............

It's almost as if they are building the Sagrada Familia (or at least the new Codiac RCMP headquarters, or the ASEC).

- the Third Sister (15 storeys)
- One Foundry (20+ storeys)
- Ashford/Downing tower (20+ storeys)
- St. Bernard Square (20+ storeys)

And this doesn't even include Infinity (30 storeys) which is out of this field of view to the east.

Another one I'm going to be interested in seeing is the Galco building at the Robinson Street parking lot. With other developers going taller, I wonder if the plans for this building are being modified? Given the very central location, it would be nice to see something taller than 6 floors.

I doubt the plans for Galco's development will change. I think it will remain six storeys. The lot is constrained by the adjacent street network and the railway, and there is really no possibility for any additional on site parking.

Do you have any news about the overflow 5400 unit? Heard they were opening it about a month or two ago and then....crickets

Sorry, I am not currently a member of medical leadership at the hospital (I am on retirement track), and am not privy to the obtuse and opaque inner workings of the multilayered labyrinthine machinations of corporate management.

Yeah, funny thing you mentioned that because that was my intention. I was also surprised after a few test shots that the riverbend almost looked like a bigger body of water.

Before the old causeway was built, the Petitcodiac River stretched all the way across to Outhouse Point in Riverview, a distance of well over a kilometre.

Yes, a century ago, Moncton was a viable seaport.

The Petitcodiac has staged an impressive comeback since the causeway gates were opened, and the causeway later removed, but it remains a pale shadow of its former self.

My house in Kingswood Park in NW Moncton is also at over 200' in elevation (taller than any point in Florida), and Lutes Mountain near the city limit is over 600'

Moncton only seems flat. There is actually a decent elevation range in the city.

Ride a bike from Champlain Place to the Airport and your calves will agree there's a decent slope across much of the city. Or from Coverdale to White Pine.

Personally, I think it's just easier to overlook because the changes in elevation are usually very gentle.

Wasn't there a study a few years back stating the river "should" revert back to 70 or 80% of it's original width in a few years after they open the causeway?
