If it weren't for such a pursuit for taller and bigger buildings, we'd all still be going bonkers over the Flatiron Building and would have a city without the hundreds of existing skyscrapers for the sake of not wanting to top a building that's 100+ years old

"No king rules forever". Sooner or later, even the likes of One Vanderbilt and 1WTC would have to look up to future "megatalls". Until that time comes, let's enjoy things for what they are, not for what they aren't

All true. It's the "spirit" of the Empire State Building that the city needs. These days, people are up in arms over 500 ft buildings. When the ESB was built, it was so much taller than any skyscraper that had been built at the time, and dwarfed everything. The way the skyline is shaping up, it's time to push to new heights. But in the meantime, I'll take a few 270s!

I like a good walk around the city after dark. I don’t think enough people take time to just enjoy and appreciate the city.

Won't be too long before it surpasses 383 Madison Avenue, and employees are looking up at the new headquarters...

I remember that only a few years after 9/11 happened, Dubai and several cities in China started building super/megatalls, and it really felt like New York was being left behind. Nothing tall was under construction in the city and Ground Zero was just a big hole with no clear future.
That was a depressing time for us skyscraper lovers, especially those of us who love New York.
All that is part of what makes it so sweet to see New York soar again. And boy is she SOARINGGGG!!

Am I seeing things, or is that cladding going up at the top of the setback?....

Unfortunately not, just black netting. The setback hasnt been fireproofed yet either so that's a good indicator that it's not cladding.

All four construction cranes are visible in this incredible photo.
Right in between Brooklyn Tower and the Chrysler Building.
