Downtown North - 300 North Pedestrian Bridge

Start Construction:The Utah Transit Authority, in partnership with Salt Lake City Transportation, Engineering and Facilities Divisions will begin construction on a new bridge for walking and bicycling along the south side of 300 North at approximately 500 West. The bridge will span 500 West, in addition to three Union Pacific Railroad and two UTA FrontRunner tracks.
It will provide a more efficient alternative for people walking and bicycling, who often experience lengthy wait times while freight trains pass, stop, and back up due to the railroad yard to the north. Construction will begin October 18 and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2022

Although it seems people are complaining a bit too much about doing some extra walking; am wondering where the logic was in not completing the central tunnel tunnel and tram in Phase 1. Anyway am really anticipating renderings for the new tunnel and tram, that will be just as exciting to see to be complete as the new airport when it opened last year.

Thank you so much for your consistent updates! Am eagerly following the progress of the airport construction. BTW regarding the airport tunnel, will the tram be located on each side with the main pedestrian throughway being located in the center? Can see in the latest photos it's already beginning to get capped.

It really wouldn't be a good idea to delay construction of the people mover until Terminal C is constructed given how badly people are already complaining about the long walk between Terminals A and B. The new central tunnel is necessary; however, won't shorten any distances for anyone flying out of the latter half of Terminal B, especially if there isn't a tram in place.

I agree 100%. If their plan is to put a tram in place eventually, and if they really saved $300 million on construction costs as a result of the pandemic, then they should seriously consider accelerating the timeline for the tram. But again, I'm not an insider, so I don't know any of the reasons behind the "why's."

They didn't, a significant portion of those funds was spent rushing the temporary hold areas and hardstand gates. The also pushed construction of South Concourse East ahead a little. Actual savings are now likely in the tens of millions, not hundreds.

The 2021 March board meeting covered this.

Maybe one of you guys familiar with the Detroit Airport can answer this question? I was looking at photos of the DTW tunnel and it seemed as if the walkway portion's ceiling is much lower than what the tunnel at the new SLC Airport will be. Just going by the measurements of the post above.

I hadn't heard that yet. Thanks for the info.

I do wonder why they're building the train infrastructure, but not the train, itself. Is there a reason they're waiting? Is it just too short a distance to justify the cost?

In one of the meetings it was brought up that a train between the two concourses would be among the shortest at any airport, the cost was certainly a factor as well. Another reason they cite is that average walking distance will be significantly cut when the Central Tunnel opens, there will likely be less griping about it when people aren't walking nearly a mile from the curb to certain B gates.

I should also add that the original plan had Delta ultimately occupying the B gates so most people there wouldn't be entering or exiting via ground anyways. (Unsure if this is still the plan though.)

As to why they are building it now? Same reason they built the mid tunnel in the 2000s, are building an extension of the Central Tunnel past north concourse, and have prepared space for another TSA screening area. SLCDA likes to keep ahead of the times, adding space to the tunnel in the 2040s or 2050s when everything is built would cost much more than it costs to build it now.
