Flames and Stampeders have announced fans and staff need to have vaccines.

Announcement coming soon from the Oilers (in time for September 1 season ticket payment is the guess).

The Edmonton Elks Covid situation is a mess - 12 players positive and counting.

it is beyond me why all players on the roster are not fully vaccinated.

I can't believe these players would show such disrespect to their fans. It should be mandatory to play and get paid - must be vaccinated. Football players besides throwing the ball around are a source of leadership and inspiration to our youth .. but not the Edmonton Elk. The City owns the stadium - make it mandatory to be vaccinated to enter it - for every person.

given that less that 2/3rds of all canadians are fully vaccinated, i would hope you feel just as strongly about vaccines being mandatory for the rest of the country, not just the local football team and the local football stadium...

Plus 2 members of the team were fined by the league. 2 losses/Covid/Lack of discipline. Where is the leadership on that team?

Edmonton Elks wide receiver Greg Ellingson was fined for an illegal low block on BC Lions defensive back Boseko Lokombo.

Edmonton Elks linebacker Brandon Pittman was fined for a tourist hit on BC Lions punter Stefan Flintoft.

Community Ownership Group needs to step up or get out of the way and follow a City directive (Council needs to step up as well) to mandate vaccinations to enter all public facilities and Commonwealth facilities and stadium. That is players, fans, staff and everyone else using a public facility. Enough already!!

I don't agree too often with BlackStar but in this case everyone here responding needs to calm down a little.

I am vaccinated, but mandated vaccines?? Are you kidding me??? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and their own rights especially when it comes to choosing what to put into your own body.

Proof of a negative covid test is fine and makes total sense. That is what the players had to do and unfortunately they tested positive. They will get better and it will all be back to normal in no time, end of story.

On the basis of the players being role models, sure it is unacceptable to publicly speak out against vaccines but the right to actually get it or not should not be a concern.

No one is say vaccines should be mandated only that if you are afraid of them then stay home. Everyone else is doing their bit to try and bring some sort of normalcy back to society and yet these self absorbed individuals think they are some how privileged and don’t have to comply to the broader social endeavour. If they don’t want to be part of the solution then STAY HOME.

So essentially mandated stay home order if you are not vaccinated??

Not wanting to get vaccinated does not mean you are self-absorbed and feel privileged, that is a very broad and harsh opinion to make of the players.

They complied with the rules, they got tested, they tested positive, they no longer entered the facilities. That is an acceptable social endeavour and they complied.

People not getting vaccinated are taking a risk they have the right to choose. Just like us who have been vaccinated, and took the risk of injecting a rushed vaccine with minimal test trials and a lot of unknowns.

Except if a game is forfeited this year, the players lose their pay. And in the CFL, any pay lost hurts the players a lot.

There will be potentially be a big divide between groups in the locker room if that happens.

And among the higher paid pros... what happens if long COVID reduced their performance/ability?

Would the Oilers be happy paying McDavid another $55 million if he couldn't do what he can do? Shouldn't they have an expectation that their investments do what is best to stay healthy?

There is risk in everything we do - nothing is 100% risk free.

Everyone over 12 now has had ample opportunity to get the vaccine and protect not only themselves but society in general. They have been given the facts in a scientific form by the greatest medical people in the world. Hundreds of millions of people have taken the vaccines with minimal side effects per capita.

Now unfortunately as is more often the case these days rules have to be created for the selfish and ignorant to protect our society.

Time to move on.

Yes, people have the right to choose. But it's not quite that simple...

We get vaccinated to protect us from the virus but we also do that to protect ourselves as a society not just as individuals. As individuals, we have limited defenses that the vaccine has proven to supplement successfully. As a society, we also have limited capacity in our health and medical systems that the vaccine has also been instrumental in supplementing successfully.

Even those of us who are vaccinated are at risk of not having surgery or ICU spaces when they are overwhelmed by COVID cases. Restrictions on those who freely choose to remain non-vaccinated individuals are for their protection as well as mine and yours and everyone else’s should they need surgery or ICU spaces for something other than COVID. To date, “simple rapid testing” is simply not as effective or as accurate and it still requires the same disclosure of information that is objected to by those against vaccine passports.

Furthermore, the risks are not only on the plane or in the restaurant or in the stadium - it’s in the terminals and concourses or the lrt at both ends. While the focus is on the plane or the restaurant or the stadium, the risk is much broader. It’s just that the plane flight or the stadium or the restaurant itself is the most logical/manageable control point and using vaccination - and not testing - as the criteria also moves the control point outward from the gate or the door to the point of purchase for the ticket or the reservation which is more and more electronic/on-line.

1.5 million Canadians have had COVID and 27,000 of us have died even with all of the measures taken to minimize both of those things. That’s in roughly a year and a half and we need to remember that virtually every one of those cases was closely connected to travel and/or close contact with other people - COVID didn’t simply arrive out of thin air and those numbers ramped up from zero. You would have thought we learned from the first or the second or the third wave but maybe we will in the fourth.

Think about the big picture as well… we don’t allow people into the country from elsewhere who haven’t been vaccinated. Why should we think Canadians deserve less protection from the actions and movement of other Canadians than from people from everywhere else in the world?

As for the "basic human rights would be violated" red herring, it’s no different than the legislation that has been in place in Ontario since 1982 requiring children to be vaccinated for nine diseases including polio, diphtheria, mumps and measles and without which they can be suspended from the right to attend public school and their parents can be fined.
