All proposals that go through approvals require the "no action" scenario, in other words, what would happen if the proposal (action) were no to be built. They study the difference between the two to determine impact of the proposal. This proposal in particular has a 10 year build out period because it requires various transit improvements that must be built.

It's a shame it's silver toned because he even more than overwhelms Chrysler. Gold tint would have been better I feel and that matches closer to Grand Central that way.

It's astounding that this supertall icon is in the works during a period of remote employment.

You think the tower overwhelms it now, put a gold behemoth next to it. As far as Grand Central goes, you would only see the two together from the street level, as the Landmarks Commission correctly noted. You might have noticed all the treatment given to that.

These towers take years to plan and build. Anybody who thinks planning shouldn’t be going on now is just foolish (and shortsighted). Sure, there will continue to be some level of remote work, but for the most part, the world will continue.

Yeh but due to the silver on silver the tower will literally disappear from the east.

It won’t.

Meanwhile, an interesting look at some construction phasing.....

You may be relieved to know that the architects avoided stainless steel for the columns, instead going for a brushed metal finish in a warm 'champagne' colour:

I personally would have loved all ~1600 feet of it to be clad in stainless steel, as it is such a lovely underrated finish for skyscrapers. But given the sensitive location framing Chrysler, I think the architects know what they are doing.

If your concern is that the Chrysler will be overshadowed by the new tower, that ship sailed with the construction of One Vanderbilt. But any further concerns should be focused on the fact that Pfizer's headquarters will most likely be redeveloped with a new, taller tower. (It's one of the largest, if the not the largest development site in east midtown).

But most people don't see the skyline at those precise angles anyway.

Aren't they still seeking to build up tp 1,646' but possibly building to about 1,480' (or whatever the number was)?

There is no final height yet. That’s just what they are working with. Changes could still affect the height.

That's what I thought. It's good news that 270 Park will be 1,425' though. What a city!

When I joined this forum, only 9 years ago, ESB was the tallest building in the city, Chrysler was #3, and Rockefeller Center was #10. Now ESB is #7, Chrysler is #11, and Rock is #30. Another 9 years from now, ESB won't even be in the top 10, Chrysler won't even be in the top 20, and Rock wont even be in the top 50. Amazing

^^ The second paragraph basically says that the height of 1642.5 ft is attained *only* if the developer chooses *all* the options that maximize height, e.g. the steepest possible "angles of the bundled structure at the base", 30 ft height for all mechanical floors, etc. The probability of that is not very high IMO, so don't get your hopes too high. Hopefully the final height will still be above 1550 ft, to set a new record for the city's highest roof.
