With the acquisition of Kansas City Southern, CP will be the continent's (likely) first and only railway which operates in Canada, the States, and Mexico.

I wonder what the significance of this listing might be, but 64 Main St. E was put up for sale 8 days ago. What do you long-time Hamiltonians know about the history of this empty lot? Who do you think might snatch it up?

That's an old Stinson property that failed, then sold to another developer, which recently filed for bankruptcy from my understanding.

It going up for sale is very good news as it likely means a real developer will snatch it up and actually build.

Thanks, Innsertnamehere. The location being so close to the core of the city, leaves one to wonder why oh why. But you said that the time is now ripe in Hamilton for lots like this to be developed. Here's to hoping!

There was a gas station on that site years ago. Contaminated soil added a layer of difficulty and extra cost for development.

But the fact the property was owned by Harry Stinson has been the major source of delay.

There are grants available for these types of developments. See Steel City Video as an example.

Yeah, I was gonna mention that remediation issue as well. I don't think Stinson or the next owner ever got around to actually doing any of that so that'll be an additional headache for the new owner. It's an attractive property in general but that intersection has been kinda cursed for the last few decades so I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah, I'm beginning to believe that has about the same chance as a King st LRT anyway. They also put Connolly and Royal Connaught as "coming soon".

Does anyone here know what this reno was / will be? It feels like this section of the building has looked like this for some time, or maybe it's just me. I can't find anything to tell me.

I don't know but it's nice to see more buildings on John get some love. I assume it's a renovation, though the city's development applications map doesn't show anything so maybe it's just sprucing up the building... Google street view from Oct-2020 shows that cover, so it's been at least 6 months but probably more. The building could be quite nice with some makeup, even if the fire escapes have to remain.

This street is one of the most desolate ones downtown. Given what is proposed along it south and north of Main and King there is opportunity for so much change; and hopefully some between the two main arteries too!

I know some don't like fire escapes, but I love them, same in New York and Toronto. They add so much character to the buildings, and they're not the same as some gross 70s wood paneling, they're just metal escapes, and they're lovely.

I don't mind them either. These ones just need to be straightened up and painted (probably black, depending on what they're doing with facade colours). The fact the tree is there too is a bonus, complements the building very nicely.
