YVR Vancouver International:
Domestic: 4,241,351 (-66.6%)
Transborder: 1,353,674 (-78.9%)
International: 1,705,262 (-77.7%)
2020 Total: 7,300,287 (-72.3%)

YYC Calgary International:
Domestic: 4,339,426 (-65.32%)
Transborder: 817,940 (-76.81%)
International: 518,117 (-72.97%)
2020 Total: 5,675,483 (-68.40%)

YUL Montreal International:
Domestic: 2,007,151 (-72.1%)
Transborder: 1,041,462 (-76.9%)
International: 2,378,249 (-72.3%)
2020 Total: 5,426,862 (-73.3%)

Domestic was strongest at YYC, YVR managed to maintain some level of International (mostly Asia-Pacific) and YUL has done best to Europe. Overall passenger numbers for 2021 will likely be close again for YYC and YUL and only marginally better at YVR with current border restrictions in place for the foreseeable future.

Some recent schedule changes:

-AA has cancelled PHX & reduced DFW to 1x daily
-DL has reduced MSP to once daily
-UA has removed ORD/IAH until June and appears to have axed SFO until November.
-WS OGG now operated by a 73W replacing 789

So far, other than NRT & BA, there hasn't been any real changes to the Summer long haul schedule yet although one could probably assume WS LGW/CDG, AC FRA & KL AMS is the best case scenario. I don't see WK or DE coming this year at all, and AC won't resume LHR until they've rebuilt YVR-LHR.

Route updates:

WS limited Transborder schedule is extended to May 4th with 2x weekly PHX, and 1x weekly PSP & OGG. HNL ends April 3rd. CUN/PVR & SJD are currently scheduled to resume May 1st, but I wouldn't count on that yet. BOS has been completely cancelled.

AC has removed all Transborder routes for S21. In May, currently only CUN is scheduled 1x weekly on Saturdays. FRA is scheduled 3x weekly from June 2, and LHR 1x daily from July 1st.

Alaska has also re-added SEA back from mid-May once daily although I have my doubts on that.

Could WS be starting YYC-LHR later this year? On Heathrow's website it shows a potential schedule under flight numbers WS060/061 starting around June.
https://www.heathrow.com/at-the-airport/terminal-guides/which-terminal (Search YYC on June 1).

Given COVID, chances are WS would be able to get slots for Summer as they did back in the Winter. Should they keep them, they would be subject to the 80/20.

Currently WS is selling YYC-LGW 1x daily from May 5, and they could easily transfer those bookings over to LHR. I guess we shall see what happens.

They’re also showing YVR-LHR as WS62/63 on the same date, but interestingly enough, not YYZ.

Yeah I saw that too. They originally requested 56 weekly slot pairs for S21, so I guess they ended up with half of that. Curious if they end up using them or returning them like they did over the winter.

I’m guessing the other 28 would be for YYZ and maybe YHZ? I guess the next few months will determine if those will actually happen.

Yes, as that matches their current Summer LGW ops.

It almost looks like their splitting their ops between the two LON airports, possibly to protect the slots they have at LGW.

There's probably a stronger chance of them using the slots over the summer, than back in the winter months but I guess we shall see.

What does 80/20 mean?

I have heard some people who have flown to London who prefer one airport over the other (eg: LGW versus LHR) for one or more reasons. For those of you still on this forum, and have flown into LHR or LGW or both, what are the pros/cons of each?

It means they would have to use the slots at least 80% of the time period awarded. I believe the 20% leaves room for unplanned cancellations like mechanical/weather/crew etc. There is a waiver in place that waives that requirement for existing slots, but all newly awarded slots are still subject to 80% usage rules.

I've only flown through LHR on a 23 hour connection, and it was a 'meh' experience. I arrived from CAI, and it took like 2 hours to get through customs, and I think it took another 30-40 minutes to get into the city. Departing was a better experience, as everything went smoothly. AC staff were pretty nice.

If you're over 80 years old or under 20 years old, you can't fly at Heathrow. They don't have time to waste with that demographic...

I’ve only flown in/out of LGW. It’s a bit rundown, and most of the gates are a real long hike from the central food/shopping hub. There are no services near the gates, and the terminal operates on a “call to gate” system which YYC tried when the international terminal first opened and failed. I don’t care for it personally.

I have only flown into and out of Heathrow (many times), never Gatwick. Compared to Gatwick, Heathrow has better connections with other airlines, operates two runways, is closer to London, and is north of the river (if that's where you want to be). It is also on the Tube (London underground Piccadilly line every ten minutes) and train to Paddington (every 30 minutes) on the newly completed Elizabeth Line. On the negative side, terminals 4 and 5 are a long way from the other 3 terminals which are located in the central area and this could be a problem, especially if connecting.

Gatwick has two terminals and until recent years has always been more of an airport for "charter" airlines and those that couldn't get a slot at Heathrow. Gatwick operates as a single-runway airport.

Transport into the city from LGW via train is quick as well: 30 mins to Victoria station.

To further the discussion above about LON, WS has now removed YYC-LGW until June 5th. As of now, DUB/FCO and CDG are all still scheduled from June 5/6. Interestingly WK still has ZRH scheduled once weekly from May 23rd for now, but last year they cancelled the flights about 2 weeks out, so we'll see. Condor also *currently* has twice weekly service from late June still scheduled as well.

Also....

YYC February 2021 Stats
Domestic: 174,309 -78.4%
Transborder: 10,903 -92.8%
International: 4,260 -93.2%
February Total: 189,472 -85.8%

2021 Year to Date: 445,684 -83.39%

International down more than 50% compared to January, and March will further plunge.

Yes, call to gate is a very British thing that even the British are not repeating in new terminal designs. The people who run YYC have learned there lesson.

ACL Start-of-Season reports confirm WS obtaining LHR slots, with YYC (& YVR) listed as destinations.
https://www.acl-uk.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/LHR-Start-of-Season-Report-S21-1.pdf

Additionally:

LGW - Lists daily operation for YYC from early June.

DUB - Appears to be cancelled? They have movements planned up to 8x weekly (or 4 roundtrips) but no destination listed and YYC/YHZ are labelled as cancelled.
