Philadelphia is at 319 murders so far, 32% more than last year. This gives the city a murder rate of about 30 per 100,000. This is on par with war torn and other underdeveloped, impoverished countries.

Sadly, yes. And it's giving fuel to a horde of our mayor bashers. The ones who you can never make happy anyway, so their opinions don't count anymore.

33 in the city isn't a high number, but it is for the middle of September. That's about where we should be for the year compared to the last few. 49 in the metro is high also. That's 10 in our non-core metro counties. Even Caldwell County had 2 of them this year, and they go years sometimes without having one. They're our most rural least populated metro county.

73% of the murders here have been with a gun. I actually heard what I thought sounded like a couple of gunshots late last night. And then there was that case last month where a guy was shot and killed in a house one street over from me. From what I read, he had gotten out of jail recently and had been abusive to his ex. She and another man shot him and buried him in the backyard. That's definitely the strangest case I've read about near me. That was just 500 feet away from where I'm sitting.

Don't worry. If that's any comfort to you, violence is on the rise everywhere.
It's the same here in France.

Watch the story I read this morning in the newspaper at the café before going to my work.
A fucked up male nut, real damaged monster from Choisy-le-Roi (Val-de-Marne, southeast Greater Paris, just a couple of miles away from my door) threw his 6-year-old kid out of the window of their 6th-floor apartment.
The poor child is close to death at the hospital right now.

Guess people with abnormally weak minds are going nuts, even worse than they usually do because of COVID that's been killing older people, that we must protect anyhow.

I'll confess, myself for instance, I've been even more irritable, tired and aggressive in my attitude than I am in any usual context, while I'm no violent person at all.
Often, I may suffer from insomnia, that makes me moody and kind of bad-tempered...
I hate sleeping anyway.

But mere violence? No. Just no. People need to keep control on themselves, no matter what virus, personal issue or situation.

I have definitely noticed both through media reports and also first-hand that general civility has been going down and that craziness is up.

Not so much where I live, though even here the normally easy-going Québécois aren't quite as easy-going as they were not that long ago.

Chicago has ~10% more murders than NYC and Los Angeles COMBINED!

I know this isn't anything new, but seeing those stats is really unbelievable.

That's +7 homicides, of which 5 are in the last week.

So, but for a bad week, you're close to margin-of-error.

If this week is part of a new pattern......that would be disconcerting.

If anomalous then the % increase will fade back down.

What are the patterns in Toronto and the rest of the canadian cities? Is there a significant difference between the murders in Toronto and Vancouver for example?

Also what are the hotspots for gun crime historically? Specific areas?
Judging from a map i saw, most shootings took place in downtown which came as a surprise to me .

Toronto has varied over time, but during the last decade has mostly wandered btw 60-70 murders in a typical year with a couple of higher outliers.

That's slightly fewer murders than in the late 70s/early 80s and Toronto is now 50% bigger.

That said, shootings have increased.

Most murder is related to gang/drug activity, but certainly not exclusive to that.

In terms of geography; like any city Toronto has its poorer areas and murder is often more common in said areas, but for the most part it isn't hyper-concentrated.

If I walked you through Toronto's worst areas, they wouldn't be super pretty but you wouldn't feel unsafe, especially in the daytime.

Downtown is still the City's entertainment/shopping hub.

Though there are major suburban nodes; you do get people who don't like each other running across each other there from time to time; as well as the normal problems with a district high in nightlife; particularly when the bars let out.

But again, nothing that is typically super problematic.....unless you're the unlucky soul, wrong place/wrong time.

****

I've spent time in lots of other Canadian Cities but wouldn't feel fit to comment on their patters in detail.

Except to say, for the last several years, Murders have been less frequent per capita in both Montreal and Vancouver vs Toronto.

Canada's higher risk large'ish cities have been Winnipeg and Edmonton or for a smaller centre, Thunder Bay.

Edmonton seems to have calmed a bit......but Winnipeg is having another bad year.

By the standards of most U.S. centres even those higher-crime centres would be fairly moderate.

But by Canadian standards remedial action is in order.

Outside of the downtown, there is a higher than average concentration of gun crime in Northwestern Toronto, in the neighbourhoods of Mount Dennis, Weston, Rexdale and the Jane & Finch corridor.

Missouri is having a rough year in general - Kansas City's murder rate has also exploded in 2020:

Quote:
Kansas City police have identified a child killed in a triple shooting there as a 1-year-old boy... The child’s death is the 148th homicide this year in Kansas City. At this time last year, 114 homicides had been recorded.
