This is Building 86 on the 20th Century Fox Studio lot. The building is still extant on the lot. It is located on the north side near the parking structure.

Those Blake, Moffitt & Towne calendars were obviously popular - here's another, this time showing November 1924.



It's inside the Keystone Print Shop at 1066 S Broadway.

I had to go back a few years to get this recent view as the building is currently being redeveloped. According to urbanize.la, the old Los Angeles Railway building at 1060 S Broadway, which was completed in 1925, is being turned into the newest location of the hip Hoxton hotel chain. There seems to be a 1062, 1064 and 1068, so I'm not exactly sure which unit housed the print shop.

I also found Blake, Moffitt & Towne's warehouse at 242 S Los Angeles Street.

The historic Ralphs building in the Westwood area of Los Angeles. Built in 1929, it's located on the corner of Westwood and Lindbrook. The store is Los Angeles City Historic-Cultural Landmark #360 and is registered with the National Register of Historic Places. Currently the building houses a Mann movie theater, and various food places (Peet's, Ben & Jerry's, Daphne's Greek Cafe).

"When the permanent buildings on the Twentieth Century Fox lot were constructed in 1928, the bungalows and the dressing-room buildings were all located on the southeast corner of the lot close to the Tennessee Gate, which served as the main entrance to the studio. Those continued to be used, but the biggest stars were given suites in the brand new Building 86 located near the Commissary, which soon became known as the “Stars’ Building.” This is a photo of the western elevation soon after construction, circa 1937."

Thanks corriganvilleand Hoss for finding that--the odd streetlamp made me wonder if it wasn't on a backlot somewhere. Only a few episodes after Building 86 was seen as the Lodestar Apartments, its entrance made a cameo as the Ogden Apartments:




Then there were the "Dorman Apartments"...perhaps another studio building?

Here's a challenge for members with better photo resources than mine. The following establishments are clear in my memory, but I have been unable to find images of them:

Klinke's Meats on Highland, between Franklin and Hollywood.
The Outlet Store on Hollywood Blvd, near Las Palmas
The hardware store, just south of Boardner's on Cherokee.
Louis the Greek's sandwich and soda fountain in the Pantages Bldg.
The dairy farm on Hollywood Way, between Glenoaks and Victory.
The mom & pop farmer's market next to Villa Cabrini on Glenoaks
Miller's Market, on the Playboy Liquor site on Yucca Street
Larson's Book shop near the Falcon Studios on Hollywood Blvd's east end.

I see the Chevrolet bow tie...so I guess it's Van Nuys plant. Apparently it opened in 1947...the cars in your image look about right for that, if this is the opening.

I have an old photo. On the wall in the photo, there is a calendar page similar to the one below, without a year on it:



I'm trying to figure out what YEAR the photo was taken.

Are there any websites that can tell you, for example, every year that August 1st fell on a Monday?

Or every year that February 1st fell on Thursday? (etc, etc)

Any suggestions are appreciated!

PS: I tried Googling for a solution, but didn't come up with anything that really helped.

What you're looking for is a "perpetual calendar." For example on this site.

Looks like the photo you have is from 1904, 10, 21, 27, 32, 38, 55, 60, or '66 if I'm reading the thing correctly.

Here is the calendar in question:

The woman is my mother, on the job as a newspaper reporter. The man is actor Lock Martin, best remembered for playing the robot Gort in The Day the Earth Stood Still.



The perpetual calendar says that September 1st fell on a Tuesday in 1942, 1953, and 1959. Due to my mother's age in the photo, these are the only years in which the photo could possibly have been taken.

The photo can't be from 1942, as my mother was still in Manzanar at that point. And it can't be September of 1959, as Lock Martin died in January of 1959. Therefore, this photo was taken in September of 1953!

It's interesting that you found another one of their calendars in the Keystone Print Shop.
I've always said...if a person looks hard enough, you will find intriguing things among the minutiae in old photographs.
I personally won't be happy until I solve an old murder.

More noirish frame grabs! These are from T-Men (1947) which I viewed this past weekend. There are oodles of location shots. Some locations are obvious, others obscure.

BTW, what's the correct pronunciation of "gasometer?" On which syl-la-ble does one place em-pha-sis?





At about 25 minutes into the film there's an unusual montage as our hero attempts to track down a suspect named "The Schemer" who is known to hang out at steam baths. Many shots are double-exposed.





I thought it was cool to see a bit of Brooks Oxford Baths, which we discussed not long ago.



United States Treasury agent Dennis O'Brien: "Did you ever spend ten nights in a Turkish bath looking for a man? Well, don't."

There's always the possibility that the bath moved sometime after 1936 (the address of the directory) and before 1946 (the filming of T-Men)

The "district just off Santa Monica Boulevard" narration may be correct. I found the Home Ice Company (in the background of the first screengrab) at 1120 N La Brea Avenue in the CDs either side of the filming date. The aerial below is from 1938, and appears to show a small, circular drive-in on the corner of Santa Monica and La Brea, but there's a rectangular building on that site in the 1948 Historic Aerials view. The 1942 CD lists a branch of California Kitchens restaurants at 1101 N La Brea, so maybe that's the place selling steaks, chops etc. South of Santa Monica Boulevard, there's a gasometer at Formosa and Romaine, which has can be reached by passing a curved building (the aerial isn't clear enough to see if any railroad tracks remain).

Apparently this shot of Wilshire Blvd was taken in August 1962.

But can anyone help me identify which stretch of it? I thought perhaps that tall black tower on the right with the vertical sign saying "STORAGE" might be a clue...?

The 2014 GSV images are the last in which this building appears. It was demolished to make way for the current building on the site of the Ponet Square Hotel.
