I'm not even into the idea of much more height in that area of downtown - I think ~200 to 250 feet is fine, but I would hope the designs step it up a little since it tends to be kind of a meh area architecturally. There are a few standouts there (notably the Cambridge Tower, but most are just big brown boxes. I just think that area of downtown could use some help in creating a style of its own distinct from the rest of downtown.
I call it "new modern generic".... it's design by available materials.
Safe... as you said...not ugly.
Just not worthy.

NOTE: on the area map in the pitch brochure
#29 (Future) The Chameleon Group Hotel.
Any info? Quick search didn't yield anything.
Been hoping that would be condos or hotel.

( and note...everything else on that block should be a block east.)

Good eye!

Chameleon seems to develop restaurants rather than hotels (Swift's Attic, Wu Chow) -- very curious to see what that means for them.

Lots of hotel action on that strip of MLK -- with Hotel Ella, the Autograph/AC, the ATT Center, and now possibly this Chameleon place.

They started to put up the walls last Monday. This is going up really fast. Its suppose to open next spring. Drove by the Domain today. The cranes at the north end look very imposing. I have to say, I'm a fan of the Domain. It just needs to get more height. Clubtokyo, it seems you get into the northern parts of Pflugerville and can take photos...really, really large ones I might add...the Parmer / I35 intersection area is a pretty good spot for getting a good angle of the Domain, if you happen to run by there.

yes... I hope that's them... I stalked their page, they have commercial properties, but I couldn't find any thing about hotel plans.
Those folks would produce a cool hotel !

I agree about it being bland. Its sad that developers think more about what will line their pockets rather than consider the existing potential use of the property and it's benefit to the surrounding neighborhood before bulldozing it over. It's not that office shouldn't be built in that area but pick a property that has nothing worth preserving. It seems like these developers pick really cool properties with a ton of potential uses as they are, but rather than incorporating those features they get rid them.

In an Odd turn. A construction company fence at 410 west 18th is down again.
I say again, because a few weeks ago a fence went up.
Then it came down.
earlier this week a fence went up ( same construction company)
And now it's down again.

???????

Is this 1115 Barton Springs actually going to be built. It has been on the radar screen from time to time for a long time. Does anybody know the actual status of this proposal. The illustrations are very attractive.

It does seem to be active, yes.

Pod Hotels can be added to the list of hotels looking to build here:
http://www.travelweekly.com/Travel-N...b-construction

From the article:
Quote:
Bernstein said Pod is "actively involved in Philadelphia right now" and is pursuing sites in Boston and Austin, Texas. The company is also putting the finishing touches on Manhattan's 670-room Pod Times Square and is slated to redevelop a 1920s hotel in downtown Los Angeles by 2019, though neither of those projects will use modular construction.

Cool concept. If they get a good location here they'll definitely get business with it being priced much less than a typical hotel in the downtown area.

For the design at 4009 Marathon Blvd, we tip our hats to industrial warehouses of a previous era. Scope of work includes the new construction of a 36,700 square foot office building consisting of 25,407 square feet of office space, a rooftop desk with water features and rainwater collection, two floors of parking, and all associated site improvements.

I continue to get irritated that these articles continue to add Texas after Austin considering our growing international presence. People should know by now where we are located.

That and the fact that Austin is an oasis in the sea of Texas.

There's a specific writing style guideline on that (from the AP).

http://www.gatehousenewsroom.com/201...t-stand-alone/

Austin doesn't make the cut (presumably because we used to be a lot smaller).

Presumably once the metro is larger (we're still not top 30) and assuming they periodically update that list, we'd be added.

We aren't the only Austin. I'm not sure how much that plays into it. Austin, Minnesota isn't well known outside of the upper Midwest, but it isn't exactly unknown either. When you're in Minnesota and you say that you're from Austin, you often have to specify Austin, TX.

I'm not sure if there are any more cities named Austin.
