I'm talking about both. I'm surprised that people are going 140 km/h in Newfoundland and nothing is being done. In AB you would 100% be stopped if they caught you going that fast and the fine would be crazy high. If the speed limit was 90 or less they would likely shoot you and then take your wallet.

Depends on the posted speed limit, but most places around here, $10,000 fine.

That would be a great idea. I drive through there from time to time and at rush hour the backup that 2-lane section creates usually goes beyond the Freeman interchange onto the QEW.

Some people do a longitudinal trip across Canada. Atlantic to Pacific or Pacific to Atlantic.

Perhaps the latitudinal trip might start up? Lake Erie to Arctic Ocean or Arctic to Erie. It's a 82 hour drive from Point Pelee to Inuvik. Add a few more to make it all the way to Tuktoyaktuk
-Trip is shorter if you cut through the USA.

Dear God, the way she talks. "There is now. A highway. One that will reach. The Arctic ocean."

I just want to kick her in the face. How is that acceptable? That's not even how mainlanders talk, it's a caricature of them. How is that acceptable to listen to on your evening news? How is she not being yelled at by everyone at the station the second she's off air, never to do it again?

I don't understand the world.

That route from Inuvik or whatever... isn't it the same route as those boys who fled the residential school died on? You'd think they'd choose some SLIGHTLY different route, instead of paving a path of tragedy.

Roads to the north would be nice, though. We still have to get a ferry to Blanc Sablon, Quebec, in order to drive to Labrador. They want to join us. The Labrador towns directly adjacent want to join Quebec. Clearly the take-away is they're under-served on both sides of the border.

I went to school with a kid whose last name was Nagy. He pronounced it NAG-ee while his parents who immigrated in the last 1950s pronounced it NAWJ-i.

Highway construction sure is different up North but good for them. that they now have access to another town in the north and the arctic ocean is a big deal. I have family that have lived in Inuvik and if you are from the south the isolation is very hard to get used to. Every town that gets connected is a huge deal for the town. My ??? is Why would they wait until November to open this highway? It will be dark almost 24/7 at the northern end and cold as you know what.. You would think they want to open this in the summer and have a celebration.

I hope Tuktoyaktuk gets a deep water port because that, and the highway will bring a significant economic boom to the area.

It's just a 2 lane dirt road, you'd need a lot more infrastructure to make that work. The logistics and costs of just getting the stuff you need up there to build the port would be insane.

Paved highways and railways are impossible up there due to the permafrost. If climate change were to melt it the entire region would become a muddy bog, impossible to do anything on.

For Canada, a good deep-water port in the north would be just south of where the permafrost starts. Churchill was a great spot but its now abandoned and the railway is destroyed in some places.

Yeah I was surprised to see them speaking to people in Inuvik and seeing how excited those people were about the highway. I would have thought that it would be a much bigger deal to those living in Tuk.

It is interesting to think that our country is more like Russia than the USA in terms of geography/geology, yet we look to the USA for how to do things.

Russia does have railways on permafrost.

Let's just not use gulags to build it.

Considering the rate of coastal erosion on the north coast due to the melting permafrost and increased wave activity, Tuktoyuktuk itself will be a deep water port within our lifetimes. If it still exists.
