Is the Sports Exports Shop in the shop on the 2nd floor near where Starbuck's and Banana Republic is? Was there a hairdresser in that area? They opened a Fernandino on the 3rd floor near where Coach is. They opened a Taylor & Cult and have a hairdresser on the 3rd floor near MacKenzie King. Do you know what is going in the location where the former Club Monaco, Hallmark, and Grand & Toy once stood?

Are you guys discussing about a tunnel being built in the location where a sinkhole took place last Wednesday? I do not know what caused the sinkhole. Could it be all the construction taking place for the LRT, because it is suppose to go underground at the Rideau Centre? This would probably be a good idea to have a tunnel in that location, if the sinkhole is difficult to be fixed.

I believe Kitchissippi was proposing a pedestrian tunnel under Rideau street to link the various buildings on Rideau. This proposal is different than the LRT tunnel which is under construction below Rideau (and below the sinkhole).

The cause of the sinkhole remains unknown and the Mayor has said it may take several months to find out, although many have speculated the construction has something to do with it.

It is very debatable what caused the sinkhole the first place. We have to wait and see several months later what caused this catastrophe. Maybe construction did cause it, but it is hard to say.

Construction is almost certainly the cause, however we don't know the details.

Yes, I guess that's the second floor - you come in form the Rideau / Sussex corner entrance, turn left at the Starbucks and up a few steps. Sports Experts is straight ahead, but to the left, between them and Starbucks, is / was a small hair salon. I haven't been there in a while so if the salon is now gone I don't know where they moved to.

I don't have answer to your last question.

I think I can answer the last question. The Sports Experts is moving into that location too from what I have heard. It will be on two levels with an escalator.

Vanier, I think that I understand what you are trying to say. They are renovating the one on the 2nd floor and I have heard news from the earlier forums that maybe the Sports Expert Shop is suppose to be in the location where the former Club Monaco once stood. There is an escalator closeby. I have also noticed that there is a spacing between the Starbuck's and Sports Experts which might be the former hairdresser. Of course, it is sealed off.

I believe you are correct. I now recall store staff saying it was going to be on two levels.

Are they converting it to a Sport Chek as well? I assume so, as I read an article a while back that all Sports Experts in Ontario would be either closed or converted to the Sport Chek banner (both owned by Canadian Tire via Forzani Group).

Wingman, I went to the Rideau Centre today to buy 2 sets of new pants from the 'Banana Republic' and a pyjama pants from 'Nordstrom' and I saw that 'Sports Expert' will be closing soon for renovation. There is still no mention whether the former 'Club Monaco', 'Grand & Toy', and 'Hallmark' are going to be the future Sport Export on the third floor.

Before anyone says I'm complaining - I'm not. Just an observation.

It's a noticeable trend to anyone who is paying attention. Not just at Rideau, but even St. Laurent and Place d'Orleans too.

This isn't to say there is no bilingual signage in these malls. There is some - emergency exits and stuff. But long gone are the days where signage was rigorously bilingual with CENTRE RIDEAU CENTRE, FOOD COURT / FOIRE ALIMENTAIRE.

Individual shops are already almost all English only at Rideau, St. Laurent and Orleans. There was a recent article in LeDroit saying Simons had backed down from a plan to have English only signage at its new Rideau store. Apparently they got tons of social media grief from Franco-Ontarians, and finally changed their minds and decided to go bilingual.

And before anyone mentions it as a "call out", yes at Promenades Gatineau and Les Galeries de Hull, signage is probably 90% French only.

I can't help but spot the irony. In a photo where a complaint observation is made about language on signage, there are signs depicting both languages.

In one case it's the City of Ottawa's sign, on which the City has elected (assumption) to represent two languages. In the other case it's a private business' sign, on which they have elected for only one language.

What kind of crazy place allows such choices to be made? Surely a law must be missing here.

My guess is that Cadillac Fairview's language risk assessment concluded that the risk is low that non-English speaking clients would be unable/unwilling to conquer the barrier. That, or they just didn't think about it.

For many years, as a kid growing up, I thought that the "Mens Hommes" was a special kind of room ("home") for men, and I guess it actually is. But I always wondered why there was no analogous "Womens Hommes". Bilingualism can be a very strange thing for kids.

Especially silly is when they try to come up with a blended bilingual marking by putting the common English/French word in the middle in big ALL CAPS. "Agent SPECIAL Constable", "Forestry SERVICES Forestiers". It highlights the word that actually doesn't have anything to do with the service they provide or why you'd need to know who they are.

As I pointed out, I was NOT complaining.

There has been an observable change in non-government Ottawa, starting with English only in the 1970s and earlier.

Then a significant upsurge in bilingualism in the 80s and 90s.

And then a move back to English only in the 2000s.

Things have also changed greatly in Quebec during my lifetime, but not in the same way.

I actually hate this type of bilingual signage.

Things can get very confusing for the non-bilingual, and people who speak neither English nor French who are trying to decipher signs. And even for us bilinguals sometimes.

Ch. de traverse Richardson Side Rd. is one of my all time favourites.

Rue Wellington W. St. is also pretty cute.

It used to be Rue Wellington West/Ouest St.
