New community rink to be named for Edmonton Oilers coaching great Glen Sather

Glen Sather rarely ran short on words in his time with the Edmonton Oilers, but he was almost at a loss for them Thursday at a city celebration saluting the architect of the Oilers dynasty.

After Mayor Don Iveson proclaimed Dec. 11 Glen Sather Day and presented the former Oilers coach and general manager with a small steel sculpture of a bison, the Oilers announced a million dollar donation by team owner Daryl Katz to the Edmonton downtown community arena.

The rink will be named in Sather’s honour. It is a part of the new downtown arena complex and will be used for community hockey programs when the Oilers and junior Oil Kings, among others, aren’t using it as a practice facility.

“I’m shocked to have a hockey arena named after me,” Sather said to the audience gathered at the Winspear Centre.

“To do this in Glen’s name is fitting and it’ll serve as a lasting tribute to his tremendous legacy in Oil Country,” said Bob Nicholson, the head of the Oilers Entertainment Group.

^^^ IMO, it would make more sense to name it after a local boy and legend, Mark Messier. I could have coached that Oilers team for God's sake.

Chose new seats at Rogers Place a minute ago, basically the same as we have now, ie. 2/3 the way up level 2 in the corner.

$4900 is now $6500 for 2 seats.

$80 a ticket ain't half bad still, face value that will be $120 or so.

Maybe at season ticket prices it's justifiable, but I took a look at face value for the remaining Rexall games, it is downright comical. Who in their right mind pays $200+ a pop for lower bowl seats to watch the Oilers in some regular season game that no one will remember a month from now?

Apparently enough to sell out Rexall every game. I wouldn't, but there are plenty of people who can / will.

Yeah, true enough. I guess there's a reason pro sports teams are worth what they're worth.

But personally, once the ticket crosses the hundred dollar line It's hard not to think of other things I could do with the money that would be even more entertaining/satisfying/rewarding. Especially when all the games on HDTV at no extra charge beyond what you already pay for cable.

As the loonie continues to plunge, expect all Canadian franchises to increase ticket prices, concessions, etc. at a higher rate than normal. We're going to see what price Canadians put on watching NHL hockey live soon. It's even more comical since 4 of the 7 Canadian teams are in the bottom 10 of the league.

^ Yeah, I could see that. This will also be an issue for Canadian teams in league that pay players in $US. Your revenues remain stable (if you don't increase tickets prices, etc), but a portion of your expenses can vary pretty wildly, 18% over this last year.

I don't think the Canadian franchises will have the same struggles as last time though, they seem more stable...

Level 2 - is that the upper deck or the loge seating level?

First, issues come to light with IGF (cost overruns, design flaws, lawsuits) followed by issues with THF. Looks like it's TD Place's turn.

One of Eric Sommer’s greatest joys is creating wood structures that transform ordinary buildings, infusing them with new shapes and warmth.

It was his company — Spring Valley Classic Custom — that installed the signature wooden veil that envelops the south side of TD Place, the rebuilt stadium at the heart of a reborn Lansdowne Park.

Sommer translated the inspiration of architect Robert Claiborne into a lattice of wood and steel so precise that nowhere is there a spot for water to collect and begin the process of decay. The structure, which incorporates more than 12 kilometres of Alaskan yellow cedar, should age gracefully.

“It’s a work of art,” Sommer said wistfully from his company headquarters in Jerseyville, a small town just west of Hamilton.

The $7-million job should have been the pinnacle of Sommer’s 27-year career.

Instead, it ruined him.

Spring Valley filed for bankruptcy on Oct. 28. Seventy workers lost their jobs.

“I won’t bring my family to Ottawa to see what we built,” Sommer said afterwards. “I couldn’t bear it.”

Ok, thanks for that. That is pretty expensive for corner seats though not at all unexpected. Seats will probably be 30 - 40 feet further from the action than a comparable seat at the old arena given there is now a suite level and a loge level between the lower bowl and upper bowl.

The LED lights in the Canadian Tire Centre are made by the same company who's supplying the field lighting for the New Mosaic Stadium. Very similar lights, but Arena version instead of stadium.

So dim able LED's will replace lighting shutters most arenas have today. I cant see too many buildings making the switch right away. True north paid a fortune for the lighting shutter system in 2011 Cant see this being replaced yet

I sat in the temp stands for the Grey Cup... there really wasn't all that much to them, just that the bleachers were on one side of the Bomber store/team offices, the stairs were on the other, and there was a bit of a bridge over top connecting the two. It wasn't a bad setup, but the amenities were pretty basic (single concession stand with beer and a few prepackaged snacks, port-a-potties instead of actual washrooms). If you wanted anything else you had a bit of a walk into the main concourse.

It does look good inside the stadium though... it integrates nicely with the rest of the place.
