The board of Invest Atlanta gave initial approval Thursday to plans to build a 407-unit apartment project adjacent to Centennial Olympic Park.
Board members approved an "inducement" resolution declaring the agency's intent to issue up to $93 million in revenue bonds for Post Centennial Park, to be built by Post Properties Inc.

According to a report in today's Atlanta Business Chronicle, officials at Hartsfield -Jackson International Airport are issuing a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to developers in order to fulfill its plans to add an upscale hotel next to its domestic terminal, a sorely needed amenity for the more than 250,000 travelers that pass through daily. The hotel is the centerpiece of an effort to spur commercial real estate development around the more than 4,700-acre campus of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport that could also include office buildings and retail space. The hotel would rise between the north and south domestic terminals, an area known as the west curb — a much-needed convenience for Hartsfield-Jackson's displaced passengers, the industry term for travelers who have missed their connections. A new transit stop could also be part of the mix.

However, the new hotel is just once piece of the planned Airport City. Hartsfield-Jackson also has about 13 acres along Interstate 85 where developers could propose a mixed-use project with office, retail and possibly residential units.

This is obviously just a fantasy drawing at this stage. However, there is no doubt that ATL should have a major hotel right at the terminal.

I wonder whoever quoted this has ever been to LAX? There are a dozen or more hotels at LAX's front door along West Century Blvd. While they may not necessarily have their own walkways/skybridges to the terminals they are pretty much at LAX's front door so the concept of an "Airport City" isn't new.

And yes this looks like a rendering from the 1960s.

They do have some of the best architecture going around right now. It's too bad the infrastructure is such a nightmare. With Buckhead Village being a mile from MARTA, people need a way to get from the station to that point without having to make that long and unpleasant walk or get stuck in traffic (like Atlantic Station has done by running shuttles in bus lanes). Meanwhile Midtown has the infrastructure but gets the most unimpressive designs. It seems like we can't get a perfect combination anywhere, but at least things are growing

On Dec. 2, Pottinger brought plans for demolishing the office building at the corner of East Paces Ferry and Grandview Avenue, which apparently will be redeveloped as an office building for the headquarters of State Bank with retail space on the lower level which fronts on Buckhead Avenue.

It's funny that you mention the perfect combination. Even if we look at just Buckhead, the area with the train stations (Buckhead and Lenox) are un-walkable and have a strip feel at best. With its loose grid, the Village actually has potential to be walkable...yet it has no train stations.

As I've said before, it would be great if the future Clifton Corridor line could continue northwest and link up with the Buckhead Village (and maybe beyond).

The city should dust off its plans for the original "people mover," which I guess was supposed to be a streetcar. That would fit right in with the new MARTA bridge.

It might be a better walk if they finish the Peachtree Boulevard project and some of those old strip centers get redeveloped.

That's not terrible architecture, I actually think it's one of the better looking ones, and besides, it's just an initial render.

The only walkability that is important in an airport hotel is the walk from the hotel to the terminal. Over the years I have stayed at several in situ airport hotels - LA, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Paris,... What they have in common is maximum utility for convenience to flights. Many times when I had business in Paris, I would move on the last night to the Sheraton directly on the CDG E-F terminals and take a morning flight back to Atlanta. The convenience is terrific; a good night's sleep, a 15 minute walk to the gates instead of a dicey, traffic congested, early rising morning of stress. The extra cost was always worth it.

I thought Atlanta made a clever move with Gateway Center. It's on the Rental Car Train at the intermediate stop, with a Marriott and Springhill Suites (and supposedly a Renaissance Hotel on the way). This is pretty much as good as an on-terminal hotel--that train takes like 2 minutes and comes every 2 minutes, and is immediately adjacent to the hotels. You're literally standing in security like 8 minutes after you check out of your room.
