By not technically being a member, a child knows s/he can leave the religion at any time, as they have not yet made any commitments. Then when they're an adult, they can make an informed decision without the psychology of previous commitments made as a child.

Making it illegal for religions to recruit children or list them among their membership roles, would help protect children from becoming psychologically locked into cult institutions.

But this may only be a first step to help the problem. As DMTower stated, "a child can't magically erase the lasting scars that religion can inflict..." So perhaps children shouldn't be allowed at all, and religious groups should be required to check for ID at the door. And if they violate the age restriction by allowing in a minor, they'd get shut down. Yes, now I'm actually suggesting it ajiuO.

But even after all of this, people would still have freedom of religion.

Also, some of you may have noticed my slowly declining presence on this forum lately..... for those of you wondering I don't think that you'll see a huge spike and increase from me in the near future.

Earlier this year, i decided to return to school to earn 2 bachelor's degrees, (in Finance & economics).I am taking at least 3-4 classes a semester in the evenings or online. I am still working a full time job as well 40 hours a week. So, between work full time, and school in the evenings I sometimes am unfortunatley unable to dedicate the time that these threads need. That time includes moderating threads and posting development related news on the threads.

As of right now I am in ongoing discussions with other forum moderators as to how to improve the moderation on these threads, and how to prevent trolling, trash talk, and fighting. As soon as the moderators have discussed the topic and the appropriate actions needed to improve the threads, this information will be posted by the board moderators.

With all this off topic talk has anybody notice over in the 111/PACthread that the 111 site now has a crane base set up? It looks to be white. Hopefully we'll see a crane rising soon.

Thanks Viper -- it's incredibly frustrating to come by for development news and find a culture war. I've been out of town for ten days, and most of the discussion in those ten days has been raging about immigration and religion. Fascinating, divisive topics to be sure, but not really the place for it. Looking forward to moderate moderation.

How do you guys feel about the concept of a spire being added to 111? I think a spire would make it a more interesting builfing , but I don't think it's on the budget.

I just got back from ten days in Chicago, teaching a workshop about historic architecture for history teachers; basically, "how to use architecture to teach history." It was pretty amazing. There were a lot of conversations about preservation vs new building that they're dealing with in Chicago. It was also very interesting to compare and contrast Salt Lake City and Chicago--not by measuring the heights of buildings or the population, but looking at the respective histories of two cities, both founded in the 1840s, and the ways architecture and urban planning have been approached.

It was awesome.

And if you're ever in Chicago, you must must must go on one of the tours that the Chicago Architecture Foundation offers. Whether it's the boat tour or a walking tour, you'll get insight into buildings that you may have never had before--and a lot of those are applicable back at home when we look at our own city.

It was also nice to share with other people from across the country how Salt Lake City has approached certain problems--and good to see that our light rail system is decades ahead of other cities of similar (and much larger) size. We're not doing everything right, but there's a lot that's happened in the last 20 years to make this a greater city than people expect.

Oh, and I pimped LEGO. And they know that you can get a drink in Utah.

jekikermit, that sounds awesome! I went on the tour in Chicago a few years ago, and am dying to do it again. That city is nothing short of amazing, especially for nerds like us.

Thanks Scott -- it's from the National Endowment for the Humanities--they have a "Landmarks of American History" program for teachers. So there were 40 teachers from across the country that were accepted for this week's workshop. They get a stipend to come to Chicago and go through the workshop. I was a participant in it 5 years ago, and this year they asked me to come and be the "master teacher." Which I think is a funny title. So we heard from architects, professors, architectural historians, etc., went on tours and site visits, and then we'd come back to the workshop and I'd help them figure out how to implement it in their classrooms. I would love to work with the Utah Heritage Foundation and come up with something similar for Utah teachers--not a weeklong workshop certainly, but there are enough historic buildings and urban planning history and current events to warrant a full day workshop for sure.

The Chicago thing is a grant, which means at any time the Chicago Architectural Foundation might not get the money to put on the program; if it happens again next year, I'll be the master teacher again. Which means another ten days in Chicago for me! Plus getting paid to do it!

Any teachers can apply for the NEH programs, but you do need to be a teacher to do it. :/

The number one coolest thing (and then I'll shut up) that we were able to do is go up in the crown of the Tribune Tower -- in the flying buttresses etc. It's been closed to the public for 40 years or so, and just in the last year started being used for private events. I was in Chicago for a conference in March and truly an awesome city from architecture and transit perspective. I walked 30 miles throughout the city while I was there and I still feel like I missed a lot of the city. Both SLC and Chicago are contemporaries yet one has amounted to a whole lot more (so far). I did venture out into the burbs of Chicago and even the burbs there make SL County look like Green Acres. with that said I also saw vast swaths of the burbs that had been razed and left empty for who know how long. It reminded me of areas I have seen of Detroit that appear to be rural farm areas very close to downtown. I got out as much as I could and walked to Pruitt-Igoe and took the train to Oak Park and saw the Frank Lloyd Wright house. I also wandered through as many of the art deco office buildings as I could and really enjoyed a couple of the (really) early retail centers (kind of like malls bu predating the malls by a few decades) in the loop. I can't wait to get back.

With all of the Development talk lately centered on the "Big Three", any news on the Air Hotel? Last I heard was that it was at 14 stories with it's groundbreaking later this year or early next year. Is this still Accurate? I think that Air's impact on the skyline is being underappreciated... Further expanding it to the South (narrowing the gap between the "Americas" and the rest of DT) and West (becoming one of tallest buildings to cross West Temple).

Also, if I may make a request from one of our many photoshop pros... Could we get a few skyline shots with it and the "BIG3" included? PLEASE AND THANK YOU!

Agreed. AirHotel is getting over looked with the Big3. ( love the name, big3 ) Since the new Courthouse tower is 10-stories, but stands taller then most 10-story buildings ( nobody knows how many feet the courthouse stands ) I'm guessing Air at 14-stories will be just a bit shorter then the courthouse across the street, And with a view from I-15 I'm guessing Air will block most of the courthouse from that view. But should still see the crown peaking over Air.

That is interesting. It will hide the courthouse looking east, but I think it will be interesting to see how those two buildings look coming up north from I-15. It will still a very noticeable building.

Looking back to 2004 ( ten years ago ) and remembering just how slow downtown development was back then with the new SLC library just opening the year before while sitting back and wondering what's the next big thing for Salt Lake? Remembering all the rumors of the LDS church wanting to redevelop the two downtown malls and just waiting to get word on just when will we ever see 222 south main break ground. In those days it would seem that just seeing a single small crane downtown was a big deal. Now move forward ten years later and there's seems to be development at just about every corner downtown. Point I'm making here is that a lot can happen in ten years. Going from dead to boom! So I can't help but think, what will these next ten years bring?

Just for fun I'm going to share my timeline guess of what we COULD see within ten years......

Later 2014 we learn a lot more about the CCH, site, developer, renderings, ect.
2015 CCH breaks ground with three new skyscrapers UC ( 111 south main, 151, and CCH ) Plus Air Hotel as another highrise UC
2016 UPAC/111 South Main opens, CCH still UC, goldman sachs moves to either 111 south main or 151 taking up most of the building.
2017 CCH tops our as Salt Lake's new tallest.
2018 CCH opens for business with a 2nd large hotel in the works
2019 LDS Church announcing plans for a 2nd COB that will be taller then their first as the church continues to grow. Future Mayor wins in a landslide in votes as SLC's newest mayor.
2020 Salt Lake City reaches past 200,000 people within the city. Zions Bank announcing plans to develop their new HQ tower on the parking lot of 1st and main
2021 UWTC announcing they have out grown their building at the former Eaglegate tower and come up with plans for a new tower 30-story + ( maybe at the future tower 8 site? )
2022 Millers or some other investers announcing of bringing a MLB team to Salt Lake City
2023 Plans for a new Baseball stadium in the works somewhere in or around downtown
2024 Tom Dolan throws in the towel as he gives up trying to have his city as "the next downtown" SLC continues to see plenty of housing/office/hotel developments all over downtown. Sugarhouse has it's own mini skyline of a group of 7-15 story buildings.

I'm sure I'm dreaming with a lot of these, but I'm just having some fun here. What do you guys have?

2015, Future Mayor is elected to the City Council.
2019, Salt Lake City is awarded the bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
2020 The Utah Jazz announce the building of a new arena in the Granary District. An arena that will be designed for both NBA and NHL, and announce the purchase of an NHL team that will be moving to Salt Lake City.
2024 The new Delta Center opens for the 2024-2025 NBA and NHL seasons, ready to be used for the 2026 Olympic games.
2027 After being used as a venue for the 2026 Olympic games Energy Solutions arena is demolished for another large convention center hotel, including more Salt Palace expo space, connected via an underground tunnel under 300 W.
