The current setup (basically an express/collector division) is perfect for the new bridge when it opens in 5-6 years. I say leave it. Southbound should get the same treatment.

"The South Fraser Perimeter Road proved to be a hot topic at Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington's town hall meeting Monday night.

Huntington talked about several issues, including poor and incorrect signage, a problem not only for local motorists but even more so for tourists. She said the government is aware of the issue and is scrambling to correct it.

She also wondered where the Ministry of Transportation is getting its traffic count figures, since electronic traffic counters have not been functioning properly.

The audience also vented about highway layout, including the Highway 17A interchange with Highway 99 northbound. The Highway 17A merge point with Highway 17 southbound, described as a "deathtrap" by Huntington, was also discussed with the MLA noting the province is looking at several changes, including lengthening the merge area and straightening the curve.

[...] the government is considering increasing the speed limit on the SFPR when, she said, Victoria has been told it should be reduced."

So the MoT wants to raise the limits? But Delta says they should be LOWERED?

They should really consider

A) lower TRUCK limits

B) variable limits (inclement weather)

C) setting the limit appropriate to each section of road, rather than an arbitrary limit for the entire highway

D) more yellow / suggested speed signage

New Westminster and Coquitlam may not see eye to eye on the Bailey bridge, but they may have common ground on the South Fraser Perimeter Road.

Coun. Chuck Puchmayr met with Coquitlam city council on Monday to discuss the South Fraser Perimeter Road’s connection – or lack of – to the new Port Mann Bridge. He said Coquitlam councillor Lou Sekora suggested New Westminster city council make a resolution asking his council to endorse a motion supporting improved connections.

“On this issue, I think we have a strong ally,” he said.

New Westminster city council approved a motion to ask Coquitlam to support a direct connection from the South Fraser Perimeter Road to the Port Mann Bridge.

Puchmayr has repeatedly voiced concerns about a 14-kilometre "detour" that forces trucks travelling on South Fraser Perimeter Road to go to 176th Street in order to access the new Port Mann Bridge.

Coun. Betty McIntosh said the Ministry of Transportation has told the city that a direct connection to the Port Mann Bridge isn’t achievable because of the steep- grades from South Fraser Perimeter Road.

Jim Lowrie, the city’s director of engineering, said a more direct connection is “quite possible” and several options exist to make a better connection from South Fraser Perimeter Road and the bridge.

Puchmayr said council has seen engineering reports that state the connection is feasible. He said the province has cited “ancient” information.

I agree with the assessment of the current detour being very lengthy, but what would those many options for a more direct connection be? The area around PMB is very built-out.

This is very interesting. The way the SFPR was routed suggests that it was never really meant for traffic heading eastbound to go back onto Highway 1 westbound at exit 53. The main purpose of this highway is to allow trucks from Deltaport a fast and convenient way to get onto Highway 1 eastbound to link to the rest of Canada. If trucks want to head north into Burnaby/Coquitlam/Port Coquitlam, then they should take either the Alex Fraser Bridge or the Pattullo Bridge.

Still, I wonder what kind of plans are on the shelf for such a project.

CN's Vancouver intermodal terminal is near SFPR (CP's is in Pitt Meadows (NFPR)):

Otherwise, the SFPR also serves the Port Kells industrial area and ties it with areas around Annacis, River Road, etc.

Yet another roll over. Not surprising either where it was at the intersection with the connector to HWY91. Truck was evidently turning onto the SFPR to head towards the docks. I see so many trucks gun it to get through the light as it turns red and it is a tight turn on a gradient. Have actually witnessed 2 trucks nearly on 2 wheels around the corner >< this close to tipping already.

Intersections on hills + intersections + curves = bad news for Trucks. Yet some more evidence as to why the SFPR is a great idea but they really should have built it a bit straighter and with no intersections.

We've had more roll overs since the opening of the SFPR (less than a year I believe) than had happened on HWY 99/91 in 10 years. And I have to drive to BCIT from South Delta in 5 minutes.

FUN TIMES.

Why would an eastbound truck on the SFPR drive all the way to 176th to then take PMB to head north across the river? They can just take the Patullo, AFB, or even the MT from Delta Port to get to their destination. Even if they had to get to Pit Meadows or Coquitlam, the GEB is an option. This new connection would be pointless.

Exactly, and that's why they're proposing a new connection.

New Westminster wants it so they can later impose a truck ban and force truckers to avoid their city by taking the Port Mann Bridge (but I guess they seem to think imposing a ban now and forcing them to 176th is too unreasonable (whereas it's reasonable to demand someone else (the Province) spend millions to accommodate them)).

That and New West doesn't have the power to ban trucks through their city entirely. The major road network is out of their jurisdiction.

They finally removed that STUPID lane restriction under the PMB.. where it narrowed to one lane in each direction and slowed to 60 km/h.

What a joke that was... the exit/entrance supposedly used for construction vehicles was blocked off for the last few months with concrete barriers anyway. Awful!! Glad it's gone now.

So is the temporary traffic light also removed in that section? If so this is a little ahead of schedule is it not? I thought they said it would be there for a year.

Does the SFPR use a different type of asphalt paving? When I drive on it, it seems pretty noisy.. and a bit brown in colour. It seems as if the SFPR East of Pattulo is older, even though the road is new.

I believe it uses quiet asphalt of some sort to reduce noise. The side effects, if I am recalling old posts correctly, are poorer drainage, reduced durability, and poorer gas mileage due to the softer nature of the mix.
