The tallest building in this picture is in fact one meter shorter than SLC's current tallest building..

I was responding to your remark about Colorado getting a "real city" before Utah. The idiom "There's no accounting for taste" doesn't make sense here. It would make sense talking about businesses coming to one state over another.

Salt Lake City had the first university in the Western U.S. The tallest building between Chicago and San Francisco in 1912. The first gay bar west of the Mississippi, opened in 1948, (closed 61 years later in 2009).

I assume you're talking about the Walker Center (220ft, 67m, 1912)

But the Daniels & Fisher Tower in Denver (325ft, 99m) was built 2 years prior in 1910.

The wiki for the Walker Center says "it stood as the tallest building between Chicago and San Francisco"

While the wiki for the D&F Tower states that it's " it was the tallest between the Mississippi and California at the time of construction".

Maybe they didn't count the D&F tower because it's a clock tower and not like a regular sized building. Wikipedia even says it was the "tallest structure" not "tallest building."

It was part of a building then, the rest just got torn down. Also, there's leasable space on each floor. There's a condo for sale now I would love.

I've never heard of anybody using a "normal sized building" standard because it's too narrow. Either it's occupied space or it's not I would think.

Not to mention the D&F Tower was the 3rd highest in the US at the time and one of the tallest in the WORLD. That's pretty freaking awesome.

Oh man, this would have been a sad day and I'm glad they saved the tower.. "One day you'll wake up.. And it'll be late again".. Kind of the motto for DURA huh...

For the record, I love that tower..

The best thing about the Sochi games is that it's reminding the world that Vancouver was a fluke, and that the winter games are not for real places or cities like the summer games are. The winter games are Lake Placid, Lillehammer, Salt Lake, other places of no consequence or note.

After Sochi, and Pyeongchang to follow, I am no longer supportive of Denver even bidding. The winter games are, unfortunately, irrelevant.
