I remember... back during the days of Gordon Campbell as premier, he promoted like all the "university-colleges", as they were then called, to the status of "university" either outright (Kwantlen, Capilano, Malaspina/VIU, Cariboo/TRU) or by amalgamation with a larger institution (Okanagan/UBCO).

Although the move received a lot of hype back then, I'm not sure what the status change really achieved in terms of fulfilling the education needs of the province. In fact, it appears that various transfer programs and other classes have been thrown under the bus over the years and their students shifted to other higher/lower institutions in favour of more degree-granting programs.

All of this history does show, however, that colleges of a certain nature can grant degrees depending on the policies, wishes and whims of the Ministry of Advanced Education and ultimately the government in charge.

kwantlen richmond does offer some degrees/programs not available anywhere else in the province, such as their interior design 4 year degree program, the program attracts a lot of out of province and no local students who would need a place to live while at school there

Actually College's are Post Secondary institutions that offer only UP TO a Bachelor's Degree. Classically, the distinction between University and College was that the school offered Graduate Studies (Master's PhDs). The trouble is that all of these shitty for profit diploma mill schools call themselves Colleges and have devalued the word "College" to the point where serious Colleges wanted to be rebranded Universities. So to accommodate this (maybe?) the rules changed so that offering a Bachelor's degree was the criteria for being a University.

Or at least that's been my take on it.

I'm not sure whether ALL the for-profit schools are that bad, but there definitely should be better quality assurance on private colleges + some sort of restriction on the use of the word "college" or "school".

The sign at the Oxford Crossing site in Port Coquitlam (former Port Chev Olds dealership on Lougheed Highway which is becoming a strip mall) now says that Loblaws will be an anchor tenant. I wonder if they're actually intending upon using the Loblaws branding.

Signs have gone up around 8451 Bridgeport Rd., the site of the proposed International Trade Centre at Versante, a three-tower proposal that includes hotel and office space.

The so-called International Trade Centre at Versante could bring 214,008 square feet of new commercial, hotel and office space to North Richmond, according to a report presented Tuesday at city hall.

Marketed as "Richmond's next epicentre of business," the proposed development consists of three towers—nine, 12 and 14 storeys—and a common five-storey podium. Included in the project is a 110-room hotel.

The proposal comes from Hotel Versante Ltd., which is seeking to rezone a 0.7-hectare (1.6-acre) triangular site at 8451 Bridgeport Rd. to build it. City council's planning committee considered the project this week, 14 years after council approved a previous rezoning application that's now being abandoned.

The site is located in Bridgeport Village, near the Airport Connector Bridge and next to Duck Island, where a multi-phase development of retail, entertainment, office, hotel and conference uses is in the early planning stages.

In a report, planners Sara Badyal and Terry Crowe describe the International Trade Centre as one that matches the city's Official Community Plan objectives.

"The proposed high-rise project, office development, pedestrian-oriented streetscapes, River Road extension, West Road widening, and Bridgeport Road pedestrian and intersection improvements will assist in making Bridgeport Village a transit-oriented, urban community."

If council approves, the application would be subject to a public hearing.

That looks like fibre cement... sweet. Developers have really upped their game here. Where's that developer guy that comes on here. Please explain why fibre cement panels are used to clad a 4 story residential building.

No news here, but just an opinion; while this development is yet another addition to Metro, and its density, and is no doubt well-located and planned, there is a stereotypical quality to it. The building angles are typical of what you find in other parts of the city, and that angled corner structure is by now not infrequent,
thus perhaps a bit formulaic.

Nice to see stuff happening though. I think most architectural periods produced stereotypes of one sort or another, anyway.
