Greensburg, PA - hidden treasure near the "burgh.

Greensburg, PA (pop ~ 15,000) is the county seat of Westmoreland County (pop ~ 350,000). The city is located about 30 east of Pittsburgh and is part of the Pittsburgh Metro area.
An interesting item from Wikipedia's article about the city - "The city ranks seventh in Pennsylvania in terms of daytime growth, behind Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Harrisburg, King of Prussia, Lancaster, and State College. It also ranks 16th in the United States for daytime growth among towns with a resident population between 15,000 to 24,999.[5] In 2007, Greensburg was ranked as one of the "Best Places to Retire" in Pennsylvania by U.S. News & World Report.
Most of the pics are from around the downtown area which is perched atop one of the many hills in the city. To me this place is another one of the many smaller city urban gems in PA.

It's probably Pittsburgh's healthiest satellite city (talking Uniontown, Washington, Steubenville, Wheeling, New Castle). Very nice.

Nice tour of my grandpa's hometown. It's a great little city.

Greensburg looks like it has a great wealth of commercial buildings.

Wow why did you visit greensburg all the way from dc? Greensburg is pretty cool, I go there about once a month to take photos. The courthouse is simply amazing. It's very similar to other semi large towns that surround pittsburgh, like butler, Washington, and uniontown. Glad you got to see it.

This for example is why it's good to see people taking care of the remarkable heritage in their hometowns.
Thanks for the bunch of unknown Midwestern towns you've toured by the way.

Fantastic shots! Greensburg is indeed a beautiful, walkable town with a lot going on. Some really great bars in town as well.

The Westmoreland Museum of American Art is currently constructing a nice, modern addition that will cantilever over the hillside soon:

If we ever get our regional rail system off the ground like we're supposed to, Greensburg's downtown could become even healthier.

One of my favorite courthouses. It's the first thing I think of when I think of this town.

I love this (appears to be) broken fountain! It's fitting if you can't take a drink from a WCTU fountain. I'm such a history nerd for posting that.

Thank you for the tour!

I *love* when an SSP photo thread clears up a foggy memory for me. In 1991, I went with some friends to NYC via Amtrak - I remembered a smaller town in Pennsylvania, specifically because it had a rather large and beautiful domed building, visible from the train. I've tried to retrace where it was with Google maps but never could figure it out - now I know. Thanks Ex-Ith - another great thread!

^ Geez MayDay, I hope you haven't crossed over into my memory recall ("Where did I put those car keys?" or worse--- "Where did I put that car?"). Anyway, glad I could help.

I was in the city for my wife's family reunion (and been there a few times before). Sometimes it seems like most folks have some kind of ties to Western PA.

I appreciate all the comments, nice to know youse liked the pics.

Looks like a nice place to visit during the daytime... and then promptly leave as night falls.
