There's also that old Shell at Pembina and Crescent Drive. Soil remediation's already been done for a while, they're putting up a strip mall there now.

Positive news for downtown story below:

Good news for downtown
REMEMBER the phenomenal growth of downtown Winnipeg in the 1920s?

Not so much? Then how about the last 71/2 years, when more than $2 billion in new development came to the downtown?

Among the 126 projects worth at least $500,000 were quite a few worth much more -- the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the Hydro building, the new police headquarters and major work on the convention centre.

"It's a one-in-100-years story," Jino Distasio, director of the University of Winnipeg's Institute of Urban Studies, told reporters Monday.

"Downtown is becoming a good-news story," he said.

The downtown now has more than 20,000 students, most thanks to the U of W and Red River College, Distasio said. Another dozen schools cited by IUS include the University of Manitoba, Booth University College and private businesses training students for hairdressing, office work and other careers.

"Students have become an economic force. We think, conservatively, they are spending $50 million" a year, he said. "Students have become the catalyst for change downtown."

Ohh, nice. I walked by there this summer and there were the yellow public hearing signs up. Said it was being redeveloped into an apartment building or something. That's some good density going in there.

^ 6/6 if accurate, nice sized units for the area. Maybe 12 units? Balconies on 2 sides of the structure? If 6 units that would be some layout with multiple balconies..

^ who knows...I was kind of hoping the city would take it over.

Just got word that Gerbassi and Vandal will introduce a motion in Council tomorrow to prepare portage and main for reopening when the agreements end in 2017.
