I feel lucky to have access to a community with such informed and passionate people. So long as everything's civil and polite, I enjoy the discussion. I've always appreciated Viking's contributions, and I think it's awesome that bmyers is here to shed some light on things from his end. Some pretty damn exciting things are beginning to happen in our lil' city. It's nice to know others are passionate our this city too.

I would tell him to go to practice and learn all the nuances of hitting in the league he's playing in before he starts telling all his friends he's going to hit a home run ....willing something doesn't make it happen....

thanks for joining. Your contributions are welcome and appreciated.

i'm behind you 100%....believe me, im the biggest Winnipeg booster there is....I am a total cheerleader.

Clearly a project on this scale will have it's issues, we all know that. So not sure why they're getting drilled for trying to build the largest private sector drivin project this city has seen in a LONG time, if ever. And they're not even a local company to boot.

Edit: Lol Cyrodill, exactly what I was getting at.
I appreciate Ben's comments and I appreciate Tru's comments. I am glad both are freely sharing their opinions. I encourage both to continue.
I don't think debate or disagreement is necessarily a bad thing.

I am enjoying all the Fortress discussion however it is really starting to dominate the general thread, perhaps a thread specific to that project is due?

That's not a bad idea. Perhaps a project of this scale deserves its own thread.

Like: SSP: Local Winnipeg which is long overdue! Fortress is coming in willing to build something iconic with private capital and some of you guys are poo-pooing it! Every big project built in Winnipeg in the ten years I have frequented this site involved lots of public money, where was all the negativity then?

I encourage discussion as well. But it was almost like a bash Fortress free for all once we had an insider on here! Almost as bad as the bash Ray Wan club that's on here (deserved or not).

A separate thread may be a good idea as well. Almost half of this thread is dedicated towards the one project.

Not so much a bash Fortress free for all as it is a case of displaying a bit of healthy skpeticism toward a project that is being presented as a done deal.

As for Ray Wan, I like a lot of his work. You can't blame him if a lot of his clients hire him to do a bunch of big boxes, parkades and other non-descript buildings. He has designed some nice large projects like the U of M Residences and the stadium, and projects like SCU and Project W will be nice additions to the skyline. I don't think the distaste for him is universal by any stretch - he can clearly do nice work when that's what his clients are willing to pay for.

This is just the kind of topic that should be discussed in the general discussion thread though. Its a major downtown development.

This thread often goes days without a single post, I'm enjoying the 2-3 new pages a day that we've been getting. Some good debate and questions happening.

Just a quick note, Winnipeg CMA rents have increased approximately 3.5% per year between 2000 and 2012 according to CMHC. If the top end of the market is $2.00 psf today and rents increase at a similar pace as the previous 12 years, that top end of the rental market would be at $2.30 psf in 2017 when our building is complete.

The following projects all have their own threads:

Winnipeg Convention Centre Expansion | Winnipeg | PROPOSED
Assiniboine Park upgrade
Winnipeg International Airport
Centreport Canada (WPG)
Heritage Landing (Winnipeg) - 25 story apartment tower
CMHR - Construction
Disraeli Bridge Reconstruction
Centre Point Project Development Updates (ALT Hotel) [Under Construction]
Wpg: Chief Peguis Trail Extension

With the potentinal size, scope and impact of the Fortress development I think it warrants its own thread leaving the more general Winnipeg Construction thread for the discussion of multiple yet smaller projects that do not warrant their own threads and note worthy events on larger projects.

Potentially new developments or wishful thinking on CentreVenture's part? See page 2
