Actually, now that I think of it, Downtown does have an uncanny resemblance to both Downtown Brooklyn and Downtown Newark.

Oops that was the wrong link lol

This is the one about Downtown Brooklyn compared with Downtown LA's Broadway.

Urban Radish Market to Open May 29

Quote:
In just a few weeks, Downtown will have a new grocery option. Carolyn Paxton, a co-owner of Urban Radish, said the market at 660 S. Mateo St. will open on May 29.

The 8,200-square-foot warehouse will sell fresh produce, meat, seafood, dairy and an array of prepared items. The operation plans to focus on fresh ingredients, Paxton said. “We’re a farm-fresh market and community eatery, a neighborhood market that’s rooted in traditional foods going back to when food was farm grown and picked off the vine when it’s ripe,” she said. The large mural of a chipmunk on the exterior of the building near the Toy Factory and Biscuit Company lofts will remain and greenery will be added around the property. Paxton said the grocer is teaming up with Homeboy Industries to create a hiring program that will train participants of the gang prevention and job development nonprofit. The May 29 opening is pending final inspections from the city. A grand opening event is slated for July.

I avoid Runyon for the same reason. Used to go all the time until I had to pull my dog from the jaws/paws of an off leash pit. After I gave the ditzy plastic owner an earful about her dog being off leash and walked away, she had the gall to say "People should like...not bring small dogs here. Its too dangerous."

Great to see the continental crosswalks going all around downtown.

I don't understand the offleash mentality unless you're in a fenced in dog park. It's so incredibly irresponsible from a variety of perspectives. Ex. - Even if someone's dog isn't violent, that owner doesn't know if my dog (who is on a leash) isn't. And nobody should ever let any pit bull off leash, but don't get me started on that. Last year in downtown I saw an occupy idiot with a pit on rope attack two dogs (in separate incidents a few minutes apart) before the police came and there have been several attacks in Elysian by pits bulls.

Eh, Runyon is an off-lease dog park past the gates, and has signs that specify where you can and cannot have your dog off-leash (which I find is generally followed, though obviously with some exceptions). I have no problem with people letting their dogs off the leash in those areas, so long as they are 100 percent confident that their dog poses no risk to the other dogs. That goes double / triple / quadruple for those with large dogs that could easily kill or maim another dog.

Like I said, I don't have a problem with off leash parks. It's letting dogs off leash in regular parks that bothers me. And you give way too much credit to humanity - of the variety of incidents I've witnessed most of the time the offending owner takes zero responsibility, yet their dog is the aggressor.

It does make a pretty big visual difference. And believe it or not, at the Hollywood continental crosswalks, most drivers actually stop at that first line! I didn't think they would get the idea, but it seems like drivers caught on pretty quickly.

BTW great picture Pink Floyd!

The Broad is obviously a unique design that probably presents its own time-consuming details that I am unfit to understand. With that said, I've seen that thing lumber on slowly for-e-ver. Meanwhile, the adjacent tower is coming along nicely. Not sure what the timeline is on each building but my guess is that the tower will top out before The Broad even begins to resemble the final product.

Oops, forgot to change that. It has three levels of underground parking.

Smart & Final Extra Grocery Store Opening Soon in Downtown LA

Silver Lake gets a WF, DTLA gets a S&F Extra.

Not exactly equal, but still better than nothing I guess

This is pretty cool.

19th century building facade will be preserved in downtown L.A.

by Roger Vincent

Quote:
The Victorian-era facade of one of the oldest buildings in downtown Los Angeles will be preserved as part of a $15-million project to provide housing for the needy.

Civil War veteran and real estate developer Charles Charnock erected what is the Charnock Block building at Main and 5th streets in 1889. The three-story complex later known as the Pershing Hotel was built with shops at street level and residences with bay windows above.

The property is on a once-thriving stretch of 5th Street that connected the Southern Pacific train station at Central Avenue with downtown. The station closed after Union Station opened nearby in 1939. Today 5th Street is on an economic upswing after decades as a notorious crime and drug-infested corridor of the city.

The building is owned by Skid Row Housing Trust, which is starting its redevelopment this week. The project is expected to be completed in about a year.
69 residential units, extra two floors added onto the top of the existing structure. Healthcare services will be housed within the building too.

^ I was wondering what was going on with that the other week when I passed by and saw green tarp surrounding the building!

That's going to really help "clean up" a rather derelict corner and make it looks less skid row-ish.

Great news on the Spring St. Park. It is opening early and will have a non-profit keep it safe, clean and maintained!

For those who like Le Pain Quotidien, the Belgian bakery with a strong LA presence (they are only in the LA market on the West Coast) it will be opening next to Tender Greens near Pershing Square:

This is extremely good news. Right up there with Urban Outfitters in terms of gamechangers for Downtown. We need more big names like these!
