Project Description: A dynamic downtown is a key ingredient of a great city. Edmonton’s Capital City Downtown Plan, built upon the goals of The Way Ahead, the City’s Strategic Plan, creates a vision for the downtown that is sustainable, vibrant, well designed and accessible. Specifically, the plan encourages the development of a more urban centre. To achieve this vision, Edmonton's downtown will need to be embraced and invested in commensurate with it being the heart of Alberta's capital city.

Transit Oriented Development Guidelines

Project Description: Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is an exciting approach to building a city. It concentrates housing, shopping and employment along a network of walkable and bikeable streets within a five minute walk of transit stations – or 400 metres in any direction. TOD will support the City’s vision of a vibrant, sustainable city with attractive, liveable and more compact communities.
To encourage and guide TOD in neighbourhoods near transit stations over the next 30 years, the City has been developing TOD Guidelines with the input of representatives from key stakeholder groups, such as community and business organizations, transit users, City departments and others. The guidelines will set out the City’s expectations for transit oriented development near current or future transit stations.

Project Description: Edmonton is a vibrant and growing metropolitan centre. We have a City Vision and a Municipal Development Plan that seek to make our city more compact and sustainable through world-class urban design.
The City Centre Redevelopment project is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a new community in the heart of the city. Perkins+Will Canada was chosen from three international finalists to help transform the City Centre Airport lands into a sustainable, transit-oriented, family-friendly community. The City Centre Redevelopment master plan – called Connecticity – creates a world class sustainable community for 30,000 residents.

Edmonton Federal Building and Centennial Plaza Redevelopment

Project Description: The Edmonton Federal Building is being effectively and dramatically repurposed to create engaging new offices and gathering spaces. The Federal Building and Centennial Plaza redevelopment project will significantly increase public space at the legislature grounds and provide year round recreational opportunities and a unique symbol of government accessibility for the 21st Century.

Green Blocks
Designer: Erik Lomeland
Project Description: Green Block is a general prototype providing a mix of dwelling options and green spaces that can be combined with communal areas for play, gatherings, urban agriculture and spaces for local businesses at street level. The Green Block is suitable for adaptation to many places in the world, but is presented here in Edmonton’s downtown.
Ideally, better housing models, similar to Green Blocks, could encourage more individual and families to choose downtown over the suburbs and sprawl. With lots of living space, outdoor space, personal privacy and space for cars, they offer many suburban advantages but with the urban advantage of a compact city address that trades less distance and energy travelling for more time toward a life and a community closer to home.

Project Description: The mural Transition is a wonderful example of a contemporary illustrative style, which is often under-represented in murals. The project was initiated and produced by the Edmonton Small Press Association (ESPA), with funding provided by the Edmonton Arts Council and in-kind support by the Edmonton chapter of the John Howard Society. ESPA hired two lead artists, Josh Holinaty and Luke Ramsey, to design the mural and ten additional artist interns from the community, who under ESPA's direction spent over 1000 hours working on the project.
The concept of the imagery is rooted in the idea of a positive transition, from a joyless, disillusioned, mass-consumerist society towards a beautiful and colourful bounty of sustainability. The mural is painted with acrylic on enamelled porcelain tiles

Metropolis: Edmonton International Winter Festival

Project Description: Since the introduction of Muk Luk Mardi Gras in 1967, there had been a desire to stage a festival during the colder months of the Edmonton Capital Region. Events Edmonton responded with METROPOLIS to create an event to be staged on Winston Churchill Square and the surrounding streets. Artists from the USA and Canada were invited by Events Edmonton to design the pavilions.
The event will consist of nine free-standing, heated temporary structures made from Aluma Systems construction scaffolding covered with white shrink wrap and design to offer shelter in normal Edmonton winter conditions. The upper interior spaces of the structural forms featured artistic, multi-media light and sound shows utilizing 21st century new media.

Colour Alley (between 103 Street and 104 Street, north of Jasper)

Project Description: This transitory topographical mural project was designed to beautify and create awareness of the physical alley space through use of colour and dynamic composition / pattern. A team of three local artists designed and executed a horizontal mural on the asphalt surface of the T-shaped alleyway. The artists were commissioned to design a graphic pattern based image to be repeated in bold colours down the length of the alleys.
The project is in support of the community group, Reclaiming Lost Spaces Committee, who developed the Alley of Light with intention of making a more community friendly space by drawing attention to lost spaces in our urban environment and to seek out ways to communicate artistic expression in the every day.

High Level Station
Designer: Greg Freer
Project Description: High Level Station is a proposed high speed rail station just north of the High Level Bridge, situated on the edge of Edmonton’s downtown and river valley.
The form of the building is a response to climate, wind, and the orientation of the sun and utilizes passive strategies for energy efficiency. Its height is kept low to respect existing views of the valley and the cantilever over the bridge becomes a distinct landmark engaging and exaggerating the river valley’s topography without disturbing it.
The station connects to existing transit infrastructure by trenching into the ground and is filled with a variety of commercial establishments. The Ribbon of Steel Park is preserved and connected with surrounding parks by lifting it up and over the existing roadways.
