Strange, a one storey being torn down and replaced... So it can happen (when developer sees fit)

Southwest Corner, north of the Parkade. Can't remember what previous proposals were called.

^^
^

That was initially a 'Parisian' inspired development which was then sold and redesigned...

I believe MacEwan may have actually purchased the property (could be wrong).

Thanks for that Cold...now I remember the project. Odd that the notice to indefinitely "postpone" is "now" happening...clearly something has motivated this to avoid any market/builder confusion.

Macewan owns the site, this project can be considered under the never built category.

Yes GMU owns the property

^This is a smart move and frankly they should have done it years ago. I worked on the project converting the Woolco to Wal-Mart and one of the first things done was eliminate the access to the mall from the store. That was the bullet.

^ I don't know if I would call it "smart". Surely the land could be put to better use and become a true community hub for the east side of the city (something sorely lacking here), rather than just another car-oriented, car-driven, otherwise barren outside of regular business hours strip mall. But as as been pointed out, developers it would seem would rather play it safe around here. Why be bold and take a chance to create something new, fresh, and different for your community, when you can build another cheap crappy strip mall for a quick buck?

^ There's virtually no walking traffic in that area. About the only people that walk to the mall are the old folks at the seniors home south of the complex, who go to the mall for coffee. If they wanted to create something "walkable" they'd have to do it all from scratch and redevelop the entire property, and the Safeway and Walmart aren't going anywhere.

I'd say this is a good move on their part. Capilano mall as it stands now is downright depressing.

^ There's a ton of residential apartments in that area, plus the site could easily accommodate more. Giving people something worth walking to might help, too.

I agree about the current state of the mall, though, it is really bad, probably the worst in the city right now. I just wish owners and developers would think a little bigger and more about creating and nurturing a community than just a quick buck and ample parking.

For some reason that I fail to comprehend, people would rather shop at a big box development than a mall.

Yeah it seems backward.

Kinda like most people would rather text than have a convo on the phone!

Imagine if texting was developed first....then the phone was developed!! Wholly wow we can actually hear a voice and sense emotion and tone lol.

So I can confirm that Corner 1 tower (left in image) is officially underway and not just site prep.

Also... there are plans for another mid-rise on 96st/103ave.
