I'm just trying to understand this mural, and where is this?

I presume this is near EB Eddy, and the symbolism of the matches/fire... but WTF is that baseball?

x2 - the Library of Parliament pictures, and the reflection in the marble floor in particular.

Great autumn colours, too!

Excellent job covering the Parliament Buildings.

This is part of a larger mural in Hull, on St-Rédempteur near Hôtel de Ville. There's a ball diamond across the road, the mural is just across the road from left field, which explains the baseball. What I don't get is why it says "Petit Chicago" on another part of the mural. I don't see the connection between Hull and Chicago.

Excellent job Flar! Downtown Ottawa and the Gatineau Hills in the fall are looking great from the Parliament buildings.

That is really fascinating! I've never seen such a thorough tour of the centre block. I really like the feel of the architecture. This room for instance reminds me of a cave with stalactites coming down from the ceiling, and the floor being so dark and shiny reminds me of a calm pool of water.

The library has an amazing feel to it as well.

I'm sure Harry Potter would be quite happy there.

Didn't Hull burn to the ground back in the day? I guess that might be the connection to Chicago, though it's a bit lame...kinda like the mural.

Nice to see Ottawa though, especially Parliament Hill.

Nice pictures! The capital buildings are really decorative and wonderful.

Why is there French and English on that memorial in the second picture? The two words are exactly the same except for the slash on top of the "E". Is it really that much of a difference? Would someone not be able to read it if only French was on there, or would someone not be able to read it if only English was on there?

^ That's true, but when it comes to monuments and things that exist mainly for ceremonial purposes, it is not just important for people to be able to read it but for people of both languages to feel included and equally respected. Symbolism trumps functionality in such situations.

Language is a big deal in Ottawa. The Federal Government offers everything in both official languages. In the case of réconciliation, not having the accent on the e would appear as a spelling mistake to Francophones. But it would likely be written twice even if spelled exactly the same.

Regarding Petit Chicago:

Hull was the place to go for drinking and nightlife, dating back to prohibition times. Even after prohibition ended in Ontario, Quebec still had a lower drinking age and bars were allowed to stay open later. Only recently has the city been "cleaned up"
