They said mid-jordan was being worked on by Gardner Village, but there has also been a lot of work done alongside Old Bingham Highway (basically made a gully flat land), and just this week they started working on a bridge to run over Bangerter.

I really need to grab my camera and take some photos.

It looks like you've routed the second track along Highland Drive right? That would be a nice alternative as well as it would reach further east. There would be more stop lights and they may need to widen the road in a few areas but I'm sure ridership would be extremely high with a Highland Drive route...

I think the next planned north/south line is the planned 5600 west line.

After that one, I think a line at 13th east would be good. Have it go from the University line down and meet with the Draper extension. Similar to the 5600 line which will join the Airport line and the Jordan extension.

Draper light-rail plans gain steam - Regional Council favors controversial route on east side

http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,705255641,00.html

DRAPER — The plans for a light-rail line running through Draper's agricultural east side are picking up steam.
The Wasatch Front Regional Council announced its preference for the controversial route just in time for a community meeting about the project on Wednesday...

With all these new routes connecting to the main Trax line they will probably need to add another north/south line eventually to speed up rotation of the trains.
I couldn't agree with you more DMTower, I think 700 East makes the most logical next step for the Trolley for many reasons. One major reason would be it's ability to accomodate both a trolley line down it's middle and a largess of development potential along it's flanks. It has a major 'mouth watering' potential for commercial and residential expansion upward. I have often lamented, as I'm sure many forumers have, "the gross under use and waste of that corridor as it currently sits." That corridor could feasibly become a grand and beautiful thoroughfare with the right planning. A wonderful Trolley running down the middle would be a boon for future, vibrant development. Imagine also the impact it could have on the continued expansion of Trolley Square. Downtown would truely expand to the East in a major way. The prospect of a Trolley down 700 East makes me giddy with excitement. The prospects would be mind blowing!!

My preferred lines:

LRT from the 900 South station through southwest downtown to Central Station

Sugarhouse extended up to the moth of Parleys and routed back down Foothill to the University.

Street car along 900 South between 900 West, continuing south down 1100 East and eventually south of SLC on Highland Drive; I think 1300 East past 2700 South creates too many engineering problems with turning onto highland drive and also carries way too much traffic to continue to function well. Plus more of Highland Drive/1100 East is zoned for some sort of commercial and higher density housing. The amount of political power in the area between 900 South and 2100 South on 1300 East will not allow for a rail line to ever be built on 1300 East. 700 East is interesting, but the state owns it and it is not likely that they are going to be too willing to pull a lane off of each direction. Plus, on 1100 East it could be a shared travel lane with vehicles and still allow on street parking.

After that, extending the 900 South line west to Redwood and have it loop with the Airport line, which should be extended to the western edge of the International Center for eventual connection to the 5600 West line.

You guys have sold me on the Trolley line up 7th East. That makes a lot of sense.

Thought I would jump on the bandwagon and add my ideas for downtown TRAX/trolley extentions. Since I have not figured out how to add a google earth image to this thread I will have to describe my vision. Consider a double circulator. One going from the Salt Lake Central Station south along 600 W to 900 S, turning east and following 900 S to meet into the current TRAX line on West Temple and heading north to 200 S where it would meet into the current line at the southeast corner of the Gateway. The other circulator would run from the southeast corner of the Gateway south to 700 S, turn east and meet up with the current TRAX line and follow it in a loop to meet back at the Gateway.

With such a configuration and stops either every block or every other block you would be withing 2 walking blocks of any stop between I-15 and State St from North Temple to 1000 S.

light rail on east side

I like the idea of having light rail on the east side. However, I think having light rail on 700 east is to close to the main light rail line to be very effective. I like the idea of going up higland drive from the sugarhouse out to cottonwood area. This is better access to thos on the east side, and it's more pedestrian friendly than 700 east. They can use expres buses on 700 east. Also, the advantage of running the highland drive route is the access to the cottonwood ski areas!!

Well, they both have good access to the Cottonwoods, however, historically Highland Drive was the route to the Cottonwoods. Those traveling there from Salt Lake City had to pass through Sugar House. I like the idea of connecting Market Station, Sugar House, Cottonwood Village (old Cottonwood Mall), and the Cottonwood Corporate Center together, all on the same line.

However, I'm a little split, because I think this is a good opportunity for a commuter rail from Salt Lake City to Park City:

You better grade-separate that line at 1300 East. Otherwise it'll be a nightmare!

UTA breaking ground today for airport TRAX line

http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,705257121,00.html

..."It's exciting and it's a relief," said Salt Lake City Councilman Carlton Christensen. "One of the hardest things for me to accept was when we had to cancel that half of the project when we built the university line.

"I look at it as really an extension not only of downtown but as opening up some great opportunities for (Salt Lake City's) west side," he said. "It's not just the rail line, but also the opportunity to redevelop the North Temple corridor."

I wonder how ceremonial the airport line ground breaking is. I know they also had a ground breaking this year for the West Valley line and the Frontrunner South line, but I sure don't see much working going on ... on either line.

It makes a good P.R. campaign. But honestly, when are we going to see these lines finished? 2015? We could be driving on parts of the Mountain View Corridor before then.

I'm not sure about the West Valley or the Front Runner south line, but I know that they are doing actual work on the West Jordan line. I pass under the future Trax bridge a couple of times a week on 7800 S, between Gardner Village and the Jordan River. They are working on building up the west side of the track in order to make the bridge two tracks wide or possibly a completely new, and wider bridge.

I would guess that maybe they are doing some work on the WVC line and possibly FR south in areas that we might be able to see at the current time. Here's to hoping that is the case.

Spot for Draper rail stop still undecided

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,705257240,00.html

...The city also is halting plans to renovate the historic Park School, saying its location near a planned light rail stop could provide a great place for additional transit-oriented development. The council has discussed creating a new zoning ordinance that would allow for skyscrapers, retail shops and office space.

Land owned by the Utah Department of Natural Resources — the Galena property — could be rezoned, as could property farther north owned by the Whitewater VII Corp. The Galena property is east of the Jordan River and north of Bangerter Highway.

Only one of the properties is expected to be made into a rail stop. The chosen spot will be the center of a high-density project that would feature buildings much taller than any currently allowed in the city...

Photo: Trax project takes flight

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker, House Speaker Greg Curtis and City Council members join Utah Transit Authority officials for a ceremonial "launch" of construction of the international airport TRAX rail line Wednesday at the Utah State Fairpark. The 6-mile link from downtown to the airport via North Temple will cost $300 million and debut in 2012. Heavy construction starts in early 2009. (Francisco Kjolseth/The Salt Lake Tribune )

Leaving Legacy behind?

* The 5-week-old Legacy Parkway is retaining most of its commuting converts. But some are straying back to Interstate 15. The attraction? The freeway's 65 mph speed limit.
* But the Legacy faithful still are lightening I-15's daily load by 26 percent.

Orange cones coming to 11400 South
* The start of a long-awaited road project is just around the corner for the southern Salt Lake Valley. Crews soon will be giving 11400 South a face-lift - widening the road from State Street to Bangerter Highway and adding an interchange at Interstate 15.
* As the project ramps up, though, it will slow down freeway traffic. One I-15 lane in each direction will close for up to 10 months.
